Job summary

The Dutchess BOCES Behavior Support Teacher collaborates with classroom staff to develop, implement, and monitor functional behavioral interventions for students with social, emotional, or behavioral needs. The role uses MTSS/PBIS, conducts FBAs, and writes BIPs while delivering crisis de-escalation and skill-building instruction.

Qualifications

• NYS Certification in School Psychology, Education or related area; BCBA preferred.
• Experience as a special education teacher, school psychologist, or related services provider.
• Experience with Autism Spectrum Disorders and/or social/emotional/behavioral disabilities.
• Formal training in Applied Behavior Analysis and related interventions.
• Strong communication, problem solving and human relation skills.

Behavior Support Teacher (2) (BCBA preferred)

The Behavior Support Teacher is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring functional behavioral interventions and specialized instruction for students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges. Working within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS/PBIS), this position conducts Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), crafts Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and provides direct crisis de-escalation and skill-building instruction. The Behavior Support Teacher collaborates closely with classroom teachers, administrators, school mental health staff, and families to foster positive classroom environments that support both academic progress and behavioral growth.

Qualifications, Experience and Competencies

• NYS Certification in School Psychology, Education or related area. BCBA preferred.
• Successful record of service as a special education teacher, school psychologist, or related services provider required.
• Experience working with school age children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and/or social/emotional/ behavioral disabilities.
• Formal training in and practical knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (or similar) and intervention strategies, including social skills/ social thinking curriculum.
• Strong communication, problem solving, and human relation skills.
• Demonstrate expertise in one or more areas in the student services division.
• Current/ active training/ certification in TCI/HWC/CPI (etc.) strategies and interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities

In collaboration with pertinent team members, will develop and write behavior intervention plans/ programs, including the completion of functional behavior assessments.

• Will utilize/demonstrate/model data collection methods.
• Make recommendations regarding strategies, implementation, and changes as well as provide specific strategies for school staff and parents to facilitate understanding and implementation.
• Observe students in school settings; consult with pertinent school staff to ensure coordination of strategies/goals.
• Facilitate communication between school and home regarding behavior intervention and support plans.
• Work directly with students and staff to model strategies, provide direct teaching of various skills, and assess current performance and progress towards BIP and other goals targeted for data collection/ analysis/ progress monitoring.
• In conjunction with school staff, plan and implement social skills activities designed to target specific social skill deficit areas identified by students IEP teams.
• Participate in team meetings to offer insights into student progress and needs; may also be required to write/contribute to IEP development.
• Other duties/responsibilities related to the behavioral needs of students as may be assigned by Coordinator of Related Services or Director of Special Education
