Job summary

The West Morris Area YMCA in New Jersey is seeking a Before and After School Child Care Counselor to support the joy of learning and adventure for children.

Hours are 7-9 a.m. and/or 2:30-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with openings in Allamuchy, Rockaway and Wharton. The counselor helps supervise activities, assist with homework, and ensure a safe, welcoming environment under the Site Director.

Qualifications

• CPR/First aid certification is required.
• Experience working with children in learning or camp environments.
• Ability to relate to diverse groups from all socio-economic backgrounds.
• Bilingual abilities are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a culture of safety.
• Support activities under Site Director, including homework, sports, games, crafts, cleanup, and drills.
• Administer emergency first aid and/or CPR as needed.
• Maintain records required by the NJ Office of Licensing.
• Supervise and discipline children per written policies.
• Counselors consult with the Site Director on policy or safety questions.
• Ensure areas, equipment, and facilities are clean, safe, and orderly.
• Share skills and talents to improve the program.
• Prepare and distribute snacks.
• Additional tasks as assigned.

The Before and After School Child Care Counselor supports the mission of the West Morris Area YMCA by fostering a passion for the joy of learning and adventure in children.

Essential Functions

1. Maintains a culture of safety.
2. Under the direction of the Site Director, support assigned activities which may include homework assistance, sports, games, crafts, clean-up, fire drills and other procedures required.
3. Administer EMERGENCY First Aid and/or CPR to any injured person as needed.
4. Maintain records and forms required by the NJ Office of Licensing.
5. Supervise and discipline children based on written policies.
6. Counselors consult with the Site Director on any questions of policy or procedure, disciplinary action, or safety.
7. Ensure that areas, equipment, and facilities used by the students are maintained in a clean, serviceable, safe, and orderly manner.
8. Share skills and talents for the improvement of the program.
9. Prepare and distribute snacks.
10. Additional tasks as assigned.
