Job summary

West Penn Heavy Haul LLC is seeking a Bed Truck Operator to safely operate bed trucks transporting drilling rig components, heavy equipment, and loads to and from jobsites. This role supports rig moves and requires attention to detail, safety, and proper load securement.

The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of bed truck experience, a valid CDL Class B, and the ability to follow DOT/FMCSA requirements while working with field crews and drivers to complete assignments safely.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating bed trucks or similar heavy trucks.
  • Experience in heavy haul, rig moving, oil & gas, construction, or related industry preferred.
  • Valid CDL Class B license required and DOT/FMCSA qualifications met.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate bed trucks to transport drilling rig components, equipment, and loads.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report issues.
  • Assist with rigging down/up and mobilization/demobilization of rigs and heavy equipment.
  • Load, position, and secure equipment; ensure proper load securement and documentation.

Position Summary

The Bed Truck Operator is responsible for safely operating bed trucks to transport drilling rig components, heavy equipment, materials, and other loads to and from jobsites. This position supports heavy haul and rig-moving operations by assisting with loading, unloading, positioning, and securement of equipment.

The Bed Truck Operator works closely with the Truck Pusher, District Manager, drivers, rigging crews, and field personnel to safely and efficiently complete transportation assignments and rig moves. This position requires strong equipment operating skills, attention to detail, mechanical awareness, and a commitment to safe work practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Bed Truck Operations
  • Safely operate bed trucks to transport drilling rig components, equipment, materials, and other loads.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report mechanical issues or safety concerns.
  • Safely maneuver trucks in jobsites, staging areas, roads, and other operating environments.
  • Position the bed truck properly for loading, unloading, and equipment placement.
  • Operate the truck in accordance with company procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding personnel, equipment, overhead hazards, ground conditions, and other potential hazards.
  • Maintain required driver logs, inspection reports, and other transportation documentation.
Rig Moving & Field Operations
  • Assist with rigging down and rigging up drilling rigs and related equipment.
  • Assist with mobilization and demobilization of drilling rigs and heavy equipment.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, staging, and positioning rig components and other equipment.
  • Work with the Truck Pusher and rigging crews to coordinate equipment movement.
  • Follow direction from field leadership during rig moves and transportation activities.
  • Assist with other field activities as needed to safely complete rig moves.
Load Securement & Equipment Handling
  • Properly load, position, and secure equipment and materials for transportation.
  • Inspect chains, binders, straps, and other load securement equipment before use.
  • Ensure loads are properly secured in accordance with company procedures and applicable regulations.
  • Assist with unloading and positioning equipment safely at the destination.
  • Report damaged or defective securement equipment to supervision.
  • Verify that loads are properly prepared before beginning transportation.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all West Penn Heavy Haul safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in JSAs, toolbox talks, pre-job meetings, and other safety activities.
  • Comply with applicable DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and customer requirements.
  • Maintain safe operating practices around heavy equipment, trucks, rigging operations, and active jobsites.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, equipment damage, or other safety concerns.
  • Maintain proper housekeeping around trucks, equipment, and work areas.
Communication & Teamwork
  • Maintain clear communication with the Truck Pusher, District Manager, Dispatch, rigging crews, and other field personnel.
  • Follow hand signals, radio communications, and directions from designated spotters and field leadership.
  • Communicate equipment concerns, delays, route issues, or jobsite conditions promptly.
  • Work effectively with drivers and field crews to complete assignments safely and efficiently.
  • Represent West Penn Heavy Haul professionally when working with customers and other contractors.
Essential Job Knowledge
  • Safe operation of bed trucks and related heavy equipment.
  • Heavy haul transportation and rig-moving operations.
  • Rigging down and rigging up drilling rigs and related equipment.
  • Load securement requirements and safe transportation practices.
  • Proper use of chains, binders, straps, and other securement equipment.
  • Basic DOT/FMCSA requirements applicable to commercial vehicle operations.
  • Truck and equipment inspection requirements.
  • Safe operating practices around heavy equipment and active jobsites.
  • Ability to recognize overhead, ground, traffic, and environmental hazards.
  • Ability to understand and follow hand signals, radio communications, work instructions, and JSAs.

  • Safety: Operates the bed truck safely and consistently follows company and regulatory requirements.
  • Equipment Operation: Demonstrates safe, efficient, and responsible operation of assigned equipment.
  • Load Securement: Ensures equipment and materials are properly loaded, positioned, and secured.
  • Rig Move Support: Effectively supports rig-up, rig-down, loading, unloading, and equipment positioning activities.
  • Equipment Care: Completes required inspections and promptly reports maintenance or equipment concerns.
  • Communication: Maintains clear and timely communication with field leadership and crew members.
  • Reliability: Reports to work as scheduled and is prepared to support changing operational needs.
  • Teamwork: Works effectively with drivers, rigging crews, and field personnel to complete assignments safely and efficiently.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating bed trucks, heavy trucks, or similar equipment preferred.
  • Previous experience in heavy haul, rig moving, oil & gas, construction, or a related industry preferred.
  • Experience with loading, unloading, and securing heavy equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic load securement and rigging practices.
  • Ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle around heavy equipment and active jobsites.
  • Ability to follow directions, hand signals, radio communications, and established operating procedures.
  • Strong safety awareness and attention to detail.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to identify basic equipment issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be willing to work varying schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and extended hours as operational needs require.
  • Ability to travel and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid CDL Class B license required.
  • Must meet all applicable DOT/FMCSA driver qualification requirements.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb onto and around trucks, trailers, equipment, and loads.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain and work around active heavy equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment as required.
