Purpose / Description
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys (Levels 1‑4) in the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office represent victims of crime on non‑complex and complex cases, draw up legal documents, and provide direction to police agencies pertaining to their cases. Levels are dependent upon years of experience.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Make recommendations on whether a criminal statute(s) has been violated.
- Review and evaluate the sufficiency of evidence for charges under criminal law.
- Prosecute non‑complex and complex cases in the Prosecutor’s Office.
- Manage caseload and address complex and difficult case issues.
- Show excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Review prosecutor’s files, take guilty pleas, argue bond motions, conduct interviews of victims and witnesses, prepare cases for trial by reviewing evidence, witness statements and exhibits.
- Issue subpoenas and handle evidentiary hearings.
- Prepare memoranda as needed and conduct voir dire.
- Conduct direct and cross examinations.
- Introduce evidence and exhibits, prepare and argue jury instructions.
- Conduct preliminary examination, conduct bench and jury trials, make closing arguments, and notify victims of all court dates.
- Meet with victims and witnesses, review sentencing guidelines, address court at time of sentencing.
- Supervise administrative staff, assist in coordinating work and activities of others, and ensure compliance with Wayne County Standards of conduct and regulations.

Job Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate Degree from a State of MI.
- Must have passed the Michigan Bar Exam.
- Experience Levels:
- Level 1: Minimum 4 years.
- Level 2: Minimum 5 years.
- Level 3: 5–7 years.
- Level 4: 7 or more years.
