Beall Applied Innovation Assistant Director, Licensing

Location: Irvine, California

About the Role

Reporting to the Director of the Research Translation Group, the Assistant Director, Licensing is a full‑time licensing professional who manages a portfolio of intellectual property in the biomedical and life sciences and leads the Life Science licensing team. The role involves interacting with faculty members, including clinical investigators and research scientists, at the UC Irvine Medical Center and the main campus. The Associate will independently manage inventions from conception to commercialization and will build productive relationships with industry leaders through communication and outreach. Additional duties include assessing technologies for patentability and commercialization, managing the patent process, developing commercialization strategies, negotiating and monitoring license agreements, and drafting and executing IP‑related agreements.

Qualifications
  • Current market knowledge and networks in the pharmaceutical, medical device, and therapeutic business sectors.
  • Strong familiarity with patent law and the role of intellectual property in business practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners, including clinical investigators.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Strong familiarity with university policy related to intellectual property and licensing.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Self‑starter able to manage a complex portfolio of diverse technologies and multitask effectively.
  • Ability to stay abreast of national and international developments in IP license and research agreements.
  • Ability to direct, motivate, and lead professional staff.
  • Skills in market research, projection, and valuation methods, and in accessing information from databases.
  • Ability to clearly communicate matters of law, policy, and science to diverse constituencies.
  • Knowledge of the medical sciences, evidenced by an advanced postgraduate degree in biomedical sciences, with research and technical experience.
  • Advanced judgment, decision‑making, creativity, problem‑solving, and critical analysis skills.
  • Ability to quickly assess new technology and incorporate it into operations.
  • Ability to pivot and remain flexible when presented with new information.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Advanced degree required.
  • Minimum five years of experience in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry, technology transfer, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five years of experience in technology licensing, including negotiation of IP contracts and execution of licensing agreements.
  • Minimum three years of supervisory experience leading a team.
