Job summary

City of Boston’s Youth Camp program seeks dedicated Camp Leaders to welcome and supervise youth, lead age-appropriate activities, and support families in a safe, inclusive environment. You will help plan and run camp activities, manage attendance and supplies, escort participants between activities, and collaborate with peers to maintain a positive and organized space.

Experience with summer camps or after-school programs is preferred; strong work ethic, dependability, and leadership are valued

Job description

Overview

1. Assist staff with welcoming and checking in children and youth, engaging youth in age-appropriate activities, both one-to-one and in small groups, transitioning between activities and recreational programs. Activities may include homework assistance, arts and crafts, STEM activities, games, community events, civic engagement, photography/video, and more. 2. Assist with program setup, supervision, participant engagement, and cleanup/breakdown for recreational, arts, and enrichment activities and community events. Organize, distribute, collect, and properly store program, games, and arts supplies. Help maintain a safe, clear, organized teen center and programming space. 3. Serve as a positive role model by providing welcoming, inclusive, and respectful assistance to youth participants and families. 4. Some youth staff at some BCYF sites may participate in some but not all the activities listed here; some may be assigned to multiple roles throughout the year, including facilities/front desk and recreation assistant. 5. Participate in civic engagement and city beautification activities efforts of the Boston City Youth Corps.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Ensure that campers are supervised at all times.
  • Help maintain a safe and enjoyable camp environment.
  • Escort youth to and from designated camp activities.
  • Work cooperatively with other Camp Leaders to complete all tasks as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in all camp activities.
  • Do head counts of participants throughout the day and accurately maintain a count of the daily group attendance during all camp activities.
  • Aid camp leaders in tracking each camper's medical conditions; observe campers for any behavior changes or illnesses during the day.
  • Observe and promote all rules and regulations of the LHCC and the day camp.
  • Carry and/or keep track of activity supplies throughout the camp day, both on-site and off.
