Job summary

Cummins Inc. is seeking a placement student in Electrochemistry within its Battery Technology team in Milton Keynes. The role offers hands-on experience in lithium‑ion test systems, data analysis and reporting to support battery development.

The successful candidate will plan experiments, develop software tools and collaborate with engineers, with an onsite work pattern and a Summer 2027 start. Relocation/travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Currently studying towards a BEng or MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics or a related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Support the design, assembly and operation of experimental lithium-ion battery test systems.
• Learn how advanced battery cells are characterised, validated and evaluated throughout their life cycle.
• Assist in the development of laboratory equipment and instrumentation used to investigate battery performance and ageing.
• Plan and execute experimental investigations involving battery cells and supporting hardware.
• Analyse large datasets using engineering and data analysis tools to identify key trends and insights.
• Develop software-based tools and visualisations to support interpretation of experimental results.
• Present findings and recommendations through technical reports and project reviews.
• Collaborate with Scientists, Engineers and Technicians on advanced battery development projects.
• Develop an understanding of how mechanical, thermal and electrical factors influence battery performance and durability.
