Job summary

The South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) is seeking a part-time Sports Activity Specialist for middle school students in Ozone Park, Queens. Based in Elmhurst, this role focuses on basketball, other sports, and SEL-aligned activities, with a school-day schedule and in-person hours from September through June.

The ideal candidate has a background in sports, coaching or playing basketball, and a commitment to youth development, teamwork, and respectful mentorship within a supportive nonprofit setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or current college students preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 2 years of academic preparation in sports, or equivalent training.
• Experience coaching or playing basketball at a competitive level.
• Knowledge of youth development, after school and public education.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities, people and projects effectively.

Responsibilities

• Supervise all activities to ensure the health, safety and well-being of program participants.
• Develop lesson plans of age-appropriate sport activities and themes that will support the development of social-emotional learning competencies, seek to build skills and encourage team spirit.
• Plan and lead basketball practices to build individual and team skills.
• Prepare students to compete in an inter-site basketball tournament.
• Introduce and teach the fundamentals of other sports to enhance overall athleticism.
• Manage classroom/gym and maintain positive learning environment.
• Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication and overall attitude.
