Job summary

South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) in Elmhurst seeks a passionate Sports Activity Specialist for elementary and middle school programs, with a focus on basketball. This part-time, in-person role supports a school-year schedule from September through June, with potential for summer rehiring.

You will design age-appropriate activities, coach basketball, and promote teamwork and SEL skills while ensuring safety and engagement for students.

Qualifications

• Minimum Bachelor’s Degree or current college students preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 2 years of academic preparation in sports, or equivalent training.
• Experience coaching or playing basketball at a competitive level.
• Knowledge and understanding of youth development, after school and public education.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities, people and projects effectively.
• Experience in providing individualized and group instruction to meet the needs of youth with various level of skills.
• Experience designing and teaching courses to ensure youth success and supports youth-centered learning.
• Demonstrated knowledge of teaching various sports techniques to elementary-school youth with an emphasis on skill building, recreation, and development.

Responsibilities

• Supervise all activities to ensure health, safety and well-being of participants.
• Develop lesson plans of age-appropriate sport activities and themes that support social-emotional learning.
• Facilitate activities that develop new skills in youth in an engaging and responsive manner.
• Plan and lead basketball practices to build individual and team skills.
• Prepare students to compete in an inter-site basketball tournament.
• Introduce and teach fundamentals of other sports to enhance athleticism.
• Manage classroom/gym and maintain a positive learning environment.
• Build positive relationships with youth and adults and model professional conduct.
• Ensure proper care of spaces and materials; report damaged items.
• Submit program reports, supply requests, lesson plans, incident reports, attendance, and timesheets.
• Assist with ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies.
• Participate in training sessions, meetings and events.
