Position purpose
The Bar Manager reports directly to and collaborates with the Restaurant Manager to ensure proper supervision and management of staff, daily restaurant operations, and maintenance of high standards of food, service, health and safety, and guest experience.
Responsibilities
- Guest Operations: Maintain a strong presence in the restaurant; ensure guests are greeted at the door and their orders are taken promptly and correctly.
- Assist Restaurant Manager in personally responding to all guest complaints.
- Closely monitor guest dining experiences and build positive relationships with repeat guests.
- Pilot creation and maintenance of bar menus; monitor food and beverage presentations and expediting process.
- Report all restaurant complaints and communicate day-to-day matters to the Restaurant Manager; review daily guest survey responses.
- Maintain and promote cleanliness standards, quality control, hygiene, health and safety; ensure cleanliness of restaurant and bar areas before, during, and after meal periods.
- Coordinate opening and closing procedures; monitor and communicate all restaurant supply needs to the Restaurant Manager and assist in requisition thereof.
- Personnel Management: Design weekly schedules; lead staff trainings for job competence and ensure adherence to restaurant policies and procedures, including service standards for F&B and guest service.
- Manage and remediate staff conflicts; participate in disciplinary actions at the Restaurant Manager's discretion.
- Assist in hiring and termination procedures, including interviews and staffing decisions per company procedures; supervise and monitor food sanitation and safety procedures.
- Train and monitor staff on guest check procedures; ensure all employees adhere to code of conduct and uniform standards as defined in the IOA handbook.
- Ensure alcohol awareness programs, such as TIPS, are followed; adhere to all work rules, procedures and policies established by the hotel and restaurant.
- Demonstrate leadership qualities as outlined in the Leadership Job Requirement Chart.
- Inventory Management/Financials: Maintain and order appropriate amounts of wines, liquor, beer, etc. per the Restaurant Manager's request; manage bar inventory weekly/monthly; supervise settlement of guest bills; follow up on accounting issues; manage cash drawer and change bag; assist in weekly payroll; certify daily shift reports and cash drops.
- Marketing: Conduct market research on service styles, menus, cocktails, wine, etc.; assist in tracking in-house marketing initiatives; network with local consumers and businesses; assist in wine selection and vendor relations; develop, implement and assess in-house promotions.
- Preferences: Understanding of restaurant industry, fiscal management, and P&L analysis; experience with Micros software; serving experience and inventory management; knowledge of workplace safety procedures; extensive knowledge of arts, culture, viniculture, agriculture, and history of the Finger Lakes and Inns of Aurora; knowledge of Cayuga County and Village of Aurora area.
Qualifications
- Masters in Hospitality Administration, or related field, or 4+ years of equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience managing 10 or more employees.
- Ability to multi-task effectively in fast-paced environments; maintain neat, professional appearance; manage a team of servers, hosts, bartenders, and other Inns of Aurora restaurant employees.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy; professional demeanor and interpersonal skills; strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Flexibility with hourly schedules, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.

- TIPS certifications; training provided as needed.
