Position Summary

The bar back is responsible for performing tasks that support the bartender and other staff members who may need help. Responsibilities include helping with opening and closing duties, taking in-room dining orders, ensuring items are stocked properly, assisting in reordering processes, and running food to guests.

This position is typically scheduled for evening shifts in our Workshop Lounge space, beginning around 4 pm and working as late as 12 am. Weekends and holidays are required as we are part of a full‑service hotel.

Candidates who are willing to cross‑train between departments (restaurant, banquets) will be considered for full‑time employment (30+ hours per week) after a 90‑day probationary period.

Essential Job Functions
  • Restock liquor bottles and change kegs.
  • Learn cocktail recipes and other menu items.
  • Clean bar and table surfaces throughout the shift.
  • Wipe down chairs, railings, and other high‑touch surfaces.
  • Remove and dispose of bags from trash receptacles in and around the bar area.
  • Remove used glassware and other utensils from customers’ tables during their stay.
  • Sweep and mop in and around bar service areas and customer common areas.
  • Answer customer questions and route complaints to the appropriate staff member.
  • Assist bartenders with taking customer orders and processing orders in the point‑of‑sale system during peak business hours.
  • Stock bar items such as glassware, straws, toothpicks, napkins, garnishes, ice, towels, and cleaning supplies (this may include restocking for bar opening or closing).
  • Ensure that taps, coolers, and other appliances like blenders or coffee makers are working properly; troubleshoot simple malfunctions as needed.
  • Maintain a clean bar.
  • Know and comply with food handling and liquor laws.
  • Engage guests in a cordial, efficient, and professional manner.
  • Perform all bar setup and restocking/replenishment of bar inventory and supplies.
  • Adhere to hotel grooming standards.
  • Assist food and beverage team as situations arise.
  • Resolve guest complaints and perform service recovery when required (and elevate to immediate supervisor if needed).
  • Perform any additional tasks requested by management.
Education

High school education/GED.

Experience

Previous experience as a barback/support staff member. On the job training is provided.

Hours required

Scheduled days and times vary based on hotel needs. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge or ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
