Job summary

Dawson Springs High School is seeking a part-time coach for the Band and Color Guard program. You will plan and lead practices, promote the program in schools and the community, and help students develop technical and performance skills.

The role requires a high school diploma, completion of background checks, AIDS awareness training, and current CPR/first aid certification. Applicants must pass the medical exam and drug screening as outlined in district policy.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of criminal records check, AIDS awareness training, current certification in first aid and CPR.
  • Medical examination as required by district policy; TB risk assessment.
  • Drug testing as part of pre-employment requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Promote Band and Color Guard in the schools and community.
  • Plan the assigned Color Guard program.
  • Organize and supervise practices.
  • Teach individual fundamental skills.
  • Teach good sportsmanship and self-control.
  • Check eligibility of participants, including insurance coverage and parent consent.
  • Provide students a proper role model, emotional support, patience, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
  • Conduct learning experiences, with small groups.
  • Recommend the purchase of equipment, supplies and uniforms as appropriate for the health, safety and welfare of students.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Job Description

Annual salary $500 as per the 2026-27 Extra Service Salary schedule.

BASIC FUNCTION:

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Promote Band and Color Guard in the schools and community.
  • Plan the assigned Color Guard program.
  • Organize and supervise practices.
  • Teach individual fundamental skills
  • Teach good sportsmanship and self-control.
  • Check eligibility of participants, including insurance coverage and parent consent.
  • Provide students a proper role model, emotional support, patience, a friendly attitude and general guidance.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Fundamentals of various choreography, dance, and flag moves/tosses
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

  • Assist Band Director.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of criminal records check, AIDS awareness training, current certification in first aid and CPR.

As a condition of initial employment, all employees shall pass a medical examination. The medical examination shall be reported on the form required by Kentucky Administrative Regulation available at the Board of Education office. The examination shall be provided by a licensed physician, physician assistant (PA), or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Each medical examination shall include a risk assessment for tuberculosis as required by Kentucky Administrative Regulation. Individuals identified by that assessment as being at high risk for TB shall be required to undergo a tuberculin skin test. 702 KAR 001:160

All applicants being considered for employment shall be required to submit to a urinalysis test for the detection of illegal use of drugs and alcohol. An applicant refusing to complete any part of the drug testing procedure will not be considered a valid candidate for employment with the District, and such will be considered as a withdrawal of the individual’s application for employment. If substance screening shows a confirmed positive result for which there is no current physician’s prescription, a second confirming test may be requested by the HRC. If the first or any requested second confirming test is positive, any current job offer will be revoked. The applicant will not be permitted to reapply for employment with the District for at least twelve (12) months and not until the applicant shows proof of successful completion of a drug rehabilitation program or proof that the applicant is no longer engaging in illegal drug use. As a condition of initial employment, all employees shall complete training for the use of physical restraint and seclusion in school districts. 704 KAR 7:160
