The Port of Portland is seeking a Baggage Handling System Technician to maintain and repair the automated baggage handling and sorting systems at PDX. This role participates in required training and maintains certifications as needed to support maintenance activities within Port Aviation Facilities.

Hours are bid by seniority per labor agreement and include one weekend day; starting wage is $51.15 per hour.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and basic algebra).
  • Successful clearance of a pre-employment background check (Airport Security Badging).
  • Valid Driver's License and drug screen clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Repair, calibrate, maintain, and replace parts on mechanical components of Baggage Handling System (BHS) equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and monitor system performance.
  • Troubleshoot problems and evaluate system condition with reports.
  • Maintain 99% availability with a 3-minute response time.
  • Follow safety protocols and work with TSA, airport operations, and tenants.

Baggage Handling System Technician

Baggage Handling System Technician provides skilled labor to maintain and repair mechanical systems at PDX, including the automated baggage handling and sorting system, automated exit lanes, grease waste system, and other tasks as assigned by management. To participate in training as identified by PDX management as required in support of maintenance activities at Port Aviation Facilities. To maintain and keep current all certifications, licenses, and skills needed to discharge the duties of this position.

Per labor agreement, hours are bid by seniority. All shifts include one weekend day, either a Saturday or a Sunday; must be able to work day, swing, or graveyard shift. The starting wage for this role is $51.15 per Labor Agreement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform repairs, calibrations, maintenance, and parts replacement on mechanical components of PDX systems and/or equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Perform preventative maintenance;
    • Calibrate equipment;
    • Monitor system performance;
    • Troubleshoot problems;
    • Replace worn parts;
    • Evaluate system condition and make reports;
    • Perform emergency repairs;
    • Track and replace conveyor belts;
    • Support operational contingency plans as required;
    • Maintain, test, & repair revolving, sliding, and overhead doors;
    • Maintain a clean working environment;
    • Maintain tools and instruments;
    • Work in a safe manner following all safety protocols and requirements.
  • Maintain the BHS to 99% availability with a 3-minute response time.
  • Maintain security and limited access to BHS and screening equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned by PDX management in accordance with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Experience working with automated baggage handling or materials handling systems preferred
    • Experience working in an aviation or industrial setting is desirable, or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent - High school diploma or equivalent is required. Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and basic algebra).
  • Successful clearance of a pre-employment background check (Airport Security Badging). Driving
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Drug screen clearance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of computers and software, welding, belting, and lacing preferred
  • Working knowledge of bearings, bushings, pulleys, sheaves, mechanical drives, and reducers to troubleshoot operational problems is required.
Ability to:
  • Work in tight spaces and at heights
  • Work in a noisy, heated environment in and around fast-moving equipment
  • Lift and move up to 100 pounds
  • Follow instructions and meet deadlines in a fast-paced working environment
  • Interpret technical instruction books and manuals
  • Work independently, with little or no supervision
  • Exercise good judgment in the absence of specific direction
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Work cooperatively with internal and external customers including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Airport Operations Supervisors (AOS), Portland Airline Consortium (PAC), airport tenants, airline personnel, general public, and other crafts
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily indoors. Work may be performed in tight spaces and/or at heights. Work will be performed in a noisy, heated environment in and around moving systems. May be required to lift heavy equipment and materials up to 100 pounds. Fast-paced environment with tight schedules. Work may be performed on or around energized systems. Shift bid by seniority, per labor agreement; must be available for all shifts. All shifts include one weekend day, either a Saturday or a Sunday; must be able to work day, swing, or graveyard shift.

Selection Process (tentative schedule):
  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of the education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources until this role closes.
  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials.
  3. Our goal is to notify candidates who are selected for interviews within 1-2 weeks of the role closing. We will then schedule the virtual first round of interviews with candidates who successfully passed the SME evaluation. Panel Interviews will be held afterward.
