Job summary

The Arena is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to join the Sensor Integration team. Onsite in Rosslyn, VA or hybrid in Seattle, WA with potential travel to DC, you will build mission-critical software for sensor data and tracking.

You will work with hardware sensors, data pipelines, and sensor fusion to deliver real-time situational awareness in challenging environments. This is a hands-on role for an early hire in a new function.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of production software engineering experience.
• Experience ingesting data directly from hardware or sensors.
• Strong backend foundation with services, APIs and data pipelines.
• Proficiency in Python or Go.
• Background in defense, aerospace, autonomous systems a plus.

Backend Software Engineer, Sensor Integration

Location: Onsite - Rosslyn, VA (daily in office) or Hybrid - Seattle, WA (with travel to DC)

About the opportunity

Our client builds mission critical software for military logistics and sustainment, giving commanders a real time operating picture of their sustainment fight, even in degraded and contested environments. They are hiring the first engineer dedicated to their Sensors and Tracking workstream.

What you will do

• Build production backend systems that ingest data directly from physical hardware, including fuel level sensors, munitions count systems, and pallet scanning technology
• Develop integrations with sensor and hardware systems, including ones with incomplete or undocumented interfaces
• Design pipelines that normalize and process sensor data for the platform
• Build tracking and sensor fusion capabilities that correlate detections from multiple sources into a single tracked entity
• Work with imperfect real world data and deploy in both unclassified and classified environments

What you bring

• 4+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems
• Hands on experience ingesting data directly from hardware, sensors, or device generated streams
• Proficiency in Python or Go, and a strong backend foundation in services, APIs, and data pipelines
• Real software development experience, writing and shipping production code
• Comfort being an early hire in a new function with limited structure
• Sensor fusion, object tracking, radar, telemetry, or embedded data pipeline experience
• Background in autonomous systems, drones, aerospace, robotics, or defense technology
