Job summary

OpenAI in San Francisco is seeking an experienced backend software engineer to architect and operate the core systems behind next-generation API agents. You will design reliable services, enable agents to locate context, execute tools, and coordinate long-running workflows with safety and efficiency.

The role spans backend engineering, infrastructure, and product impact, offering opportunities across orchestration, identity and permissions, observability, and evaluations.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
• Strong systems design and distributed systems expertise.
• Experience building APIs and backend services at scale.
• Ability to operate across execution environments, observability, and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the shared agent harness and backend infrastructure powering long-running workflows across OpenAI and partner products.
• Build reusable capabilities across search, memory, tool execution, delegation, subagents, and multi-agent orchestration.
• Establish production-grade environments with secure execution, identity and permissions, observability, reliability, and cost/latency efficiency.
• Collaborate with Research, Codex, infrastructure and product teams to translate model progress and traces into practical capabilities and measurable gains.
