Job summary

Bold Penguin, a premier digital broker for commercial insurance, seeks a Backend / Data Engineer to own data movement from ingestion to product delivery within the Digital Exchange. You will ensure accuracy, traceability, and security while collaborating with AI engineers and domain experts.

Remote role with onboarding in Dublin, OH. You will design and operate data pipelines, provide API/data contract services, and drive data quality, lineage, and observability to scale coverage intelligence

Qualifications

• 5+ years in backend or data engineering, producing production services and pipelines.
• Strong Python and SQL skills.
• Experience with MongoDB and relational DBs (PostgreSQL or similar).
• Designing APIs and data contracts for other teams.
• Workflow orchestration with Prefect or Airflow.
• Hands-on AWS with containers, IaC and observability tooling.
• Modeling versioned, effective-dated reference data.
• CI/CD pipelines knowledge.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Autonomous with high quality standards in a startup pace.
• Experience with ML/LLM data pipelines or model serving is a plus.
• OpenSearch experience is preferred.
• LLM observability or evaluation tooling is a plus.
• Insurtech or insurance data concepts familiarity is a plus.

You own how data moves through the system, from ingestion through to the products that rely on it, and you make sure it is accurate, traceable and secure. You work closely with AI engineers and domain specialists, and help shape the team’s data and platform architecture as it grows.

You work closely with AI engineers and domain specialists, and help shape the team’s data and platform architecture as it grows.

What You'll Do

• Design, build and operate the pipelines and data stores behind coverage intelligence.
• Build the services and data contracts that deliver coverage insights to other teams and products.
• Ensure every result can be traced back to its source, with strong data quality and lineage.
• Build the data infrastructure that lets the team measure accuracy and improve it with every release.
• Own the reliability, performance and cost of the team’s production services.
• Uphold security and privacy standards for sensitive policy and customer data.
• Partner with engineers and specialists across teams to integrate coverage data into the wider platform.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

YOUR LOCATION

This is a fully remote role, with the exception of onboarding and optional in-office events.

Skills And Qualifications

• 5+ years’ experience in backend or data engineering, building and operating production services and pipelines.
• Strong Python and SQL.
• Experience with MongoDB and relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar).
• Experience designing APIs and data contracts consumed by other teams.
• Experience with workflow orchestration (e.g., Prefect or Airflow) and batch and event-driven processing.
• Hands-on AWS experience, including containers, infrastructure as code and observability tooling.
• Experience modeling versioned, effective-dated reference data.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Works autonomously with minimal direction, sets a clear path through ambiguity, and holds a high bar for quality.
• Thrives on the energy of a start up: comfortable with pace, changing priorities, and building the function while running it.
• Experience supporting machine learning or LLM systems in production, such as data pipelines, evaluation data or model serving (strongly preferred).
• Experience with search stores such as OpenSearch (preferred).
• Experience supporting LLM observability or evaluation tooling (preferred).
• Insurance or insurtech experience, including familiarity with insurance concepts and insurance-specific canonical data models (preferred).

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to sit/stand/walk for prolonged periods of time (up to 8 hours per day), at a desk working on a computer.
• Must be able to use standard office equipment for extended periods of time, including but not limited to, a mouse, keyboard, phone and video conferencing.
• Must be able to travel to the Bold Penguin office in Dublin, Ohio for New Hire Onboarding & Orientation (2 days, 2 nights); travel costs are covered by Bold Penguin.
• Must be able to travel occasionally (up to 10%) for corporate events and team planning sessions.
