Description

We are seeking a Database Administrator to manage, maintain, and optimize our enterprise database infrastructure supporting millions of members nationwide. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, security, and integrity of our critical database systems, with a primary focus on Azure SQL databases and SQL Server environments.

You will work closely with development teams, DevOps engineers, and infrastructure specialists to support our 24x7 production systems, implement best practices for database administration, and proactively identify opportunities for performance optimization and operational improvement. This role requires both deep technical expertise in database systems and strong collaboration skills to work effectively across engineering teams.

The ideal candidate is passionate about database reliability and performance, comfortable working in cloud‑native environments, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of data security and compliance in a regulated healthcare environment. You will be part of a team that values operational excellence, continuous improvement, and proactive problem‑solving.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain Azure SQL and SQL Server database environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability for production systems.

• Monitor database performance metrics and proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, inefficient queries, and resource constraints.

• Implement and maintain database backup and recovery strategies, ensuring data protection and disaster recovery capabilities meet business requirements.

• Analyze and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and database schemas to improve performance and maintainability.

• Implement and maintain database security controls, access management, and compliance requirements including HIPAA regulations.

• Collaborate with development teams to review database design, indexing strategies, and data access patterns for optimal performance.

• Administer Databricks workspace configurations, cluster management, Unity Catalog governance, and data warehouse performance optimization.

• Automate routine database administration tasks using PowerShell, T‑SQL, and Azure automation tools.

• Participate in on‑call rotation to provide 24x7 database support and incident response.

• Document database configurations, procedures, and operational runbooks for knowledge sharing and continuity.

• Work with DevSecOps teams to implement database changes through CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure‑as‑code practices.

• Conduct regular database health checks, performance tuning, and proactive maintenance activities.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

• 5+ years of database administration experience with SQL Server and Azure SQL in production environments.

• Strong expertise in database performance tuning, query optimization, and indexing strategies.

• Hands‑on experience with database backup and recovery procedures, high availability solutions, and disaster recovery planning.

• Proficiency in T‑SQL for database scripting, stored procedures, and complex query development.

• Experience with database monitoring tools and performance analysis using SQL Server Management Studio, Azure Monitor, and query execution plans.

• Strong understanding of database security principles, access controls, and encryption technologies.

• Knowledge of database normalization, schema design, and relational database concepts.

• Experience with PowerShell or similar scripting languages for automation.

• Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills for complex database issues.

• Strong communication skills with ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Microsoft certifications such as Azure Database Administrator Associate or SQL Server certifications, or Databricks certifications.

• Experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, and Azure PaaS database services.

• Knowledge of Always on Availability Groups, replication, and other high availability technologies.

• Experience with Databricks administration, including workspace management, cluster configuration, and Unity Catalog governance.

• Experience working in regulated industries, particularly healthcare with HIPAA compliance requirements.

• Familiarity with C# and .NET applications for understanding application‑database interactions.

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or ARM templates for database provisioning.

• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for database deployments using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.

• Experience with database migration tools and strategies for moving databases to Azure cloud.

• Understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience with analytical database systems.

• Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as DataDog, Prometheus, or similar platforms.
