The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces an opening for a Computer Information Systems instructor at Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC). LAVC is a two-year community college located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and is one of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. Serving more than 20,000 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, LAVC provides strong transfer, transitional, and career educational programs and is committed to student success. The College works closely with local secondary institutions to assist high school students in their transition to higher education and maintains strong ties to the business community by providing highly respected training programs that meet the direct needs of local employers.The College offers more than 200 credit and noncredit programs, including 29 associate degrees for transfer, one bachelor’s degree program, and many short-term certificates. LAVC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges and is a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at LAVC consists of two full-time faculty members and approximately 12 adjunct faculty. The department offers industry-aligned curriculum with specialties in cybersecurity and programming.We have a strong commitment to our program and our students.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at Los Angeles Valley College focuses on creating pathways for certificates, degrees, and transfer. Faculty members at Los Angeles Valley College are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals. The assignment may consist of day, evening and/or weekend classes to be taught in-person, and may include off campus, high school dual enrollment, hybrid, and online courses.This is a ten-month appointment; however, additional summer and winter assignments may be available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teaching the regular load, as defined by the collective bargaining agreement, computer information systems courses and holding regular office hours.
• Planning, developing, and implementing course curricula, as well as updating course materials and course outlines of record.
• Contributing to the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
• Cultural responsiveness in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
• Completing and submitting required documents in a timely manner.
• Participating in mandated projects, such as Program Review.
• Participating in department and campus committees and activities.
• Participating in professional development and maintaining current knowledge in the discipline.
• Performing other academic duties and responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR
• Associate’s degree and six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; Or
• The Equivalent.
• Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Advanced education beyond the minimumrequired, research experience, and possession of an excellent academic record thatindicatesa strong background incomputer information systems.
• At least four years of work experience in computer programming,script writing, server-side coding, cloud computing, cyber and cloud security, information compliance,ordata analytics.
• Industry-recognized cybersecurity certification, for example inCompTIA Security+,Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC),Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH),GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH),Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA),Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), and/or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) .
• Experience teaching computer information systems in a community college or other college setting.
• Experience or interest in web enhancing and/or teaching online courses and ability to use technology.
• Ability to set specific learning outcomes andobjectivesand measure achieved results.
• Commitment to a career in a diverse, student-centered Department and College.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
• Knowledge of equity-centered educational research on best practices to support the success of Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and other students of color.
• Ability to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students, including those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.
• Experience developing andmaintainingpartnerships with industry to support workforce development, internships, apprenticeships, advisory board engagement, and student employment opportunities.
• Grant writing and project implementation experience.
• Success at initiating,executingand following up on projectsin a timely manner.
• Commitment tomaintaininga current knowledge of recent developments in computer information systems.
• Commitment to execute extracurricular responsibilities within the Department and College.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

The current starting range is from $76,960 – $143,000 for the ten-month academic year depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $4,870 per academic year.
