General Summary:

Incumbent will be a highly experienced legal advisor to a variety of functional organizations relating to data privacy and cybersecurity for all product lines offered by all Unum Group domestic (U.S.) companies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Enforces and defends Company’s interests in litigation and disputed matters related to data privacy and cybersecurity; selects, assists and supervises outside counsel.
2. Handles legal aspects of insurance regulatory matters pertaining to data privacy and cybersecurity, including breach response.
3. Provides legal support to designated business units, manages workflow from and relationships with all levels of management of each unit.
4. Prepares legally binding documents; drafts, negotiates and develops complex contracts and forms; may be responsible for state filings, approvals of contracts, rates and marketing materials, and systems implementation.
5. Monitors and keeps legal management team apprised of and solicits their input as appropriate on significant legal issues.
6. Analyzes and formulates company’s position on legislation/regulations.
7. Serves as a legal advisor to business units responsible for litigation, product development, claims, underwriting, sales, distribution, corporate, and marketing initiatives for all product lines offered by all domestic (U.S.) companies.
8. Incorporates insurance, privacy, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence relevant laws and regulations to business plans and objectives.
9. Identifies law-related training needs of Company personnel; develops and delivers training through various mechanisms including written materials, classroom and staff presentations.
10. Ensures that all business clients give appropriate attention to the Code of Conduct.
11. May perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

1. J.D. (law degree) plus admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
2. A minimum of five years of relevant experience in a business, corporate or other legal environment.
3. Knowledge of the state and federal regulatory environment, including state filing and compliance requirements and processes.
4. Demonstrated leadership qualities including ability to build effective working relationships with key constituents across the Enterprise.
5. Insurance product knowledge preferred.
6. Strong leadership skills, including strategic planning and project management preferred.
7. Strong people and change management skills preferred.
8. The ability to understand multiple technology applications preferred.
9. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
10. Litigation experience preferred (necessary for some positions).

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$133,500.00-$274,100.00
