Job summary

Salem-Keizer Public Schools is seeking AVID tutors to support students in study groups and individual sessions. Tutors are trained to use specific teaching methodologies and materials to help AVID students progress toward college and career readiness.

Tutors facilitate small, subject-specific groups, using Socratic questioning and collaborative learning to help students find answers with peer support and teacher guidance. Interviews may be virtual or in person.

Qualifications

• AVID tutors should be excellent role models of motivated, organized, successful college students who believe that AVID students will succeed.

Responsibilities

• Conduct in-person tutorial sessions that emphasize collaborative learning and peer teaching.
• Determine from student notes and discussions the concepts to focus on during tutorials.
• Guide students to take ownership of their learning while offering supportive strategies.
• Assist students in any subject area using AVID classroom resources and textbooks.
• Provide constructive feedback online and in-person on student work.
• Support AVID scholars through care and connection and maintain a positive classroom tone.
• Assist the AVID coordinator with tasks like contacting teachers, coordinating outlines, and scheduling field trips.
• Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher about student progress and concerns.
• Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
