Job summary

District 196 in Minnesota is seeking AVID Tutors to support middle/high school students at Black Hawk Middle School. AVID Tutors assist with subject tutoring, study skills, and college preparation, acting as positive role models and mentors for students from diverse backgrounds.

The role requires developing students' academic and personal strengths, collaborating with AVID coordinators, and delivering tutorials and mini-lessons.

Qualifications

  • AVID Tutors support identified students to build study habits and college readiness.
  • Experience communicating with students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AVID strategies is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students.
  • Serve as a positive role model/mentor to students.
  • Determine concepts to teach or reteach from students' notes and discussions.
  • Review student class and textbook notes, binders, and calendars.
  • Become familiar with AVID textbooks and materials used by AVID students.
  • Conduct tutorial sessions in all subjects individually or in small groups.
  • Conduct mini-lessons in the WICOR process in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
  • Assist students in all phases of the formal writing process, including brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
  • Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of AVID instructional materials for tutorials.
  • Review the performance and work of students on tutorials.
  • Meet and communicate with the AVID coordinator and/or teachers regarding student progress, course outlines, and assignment schedules.
  • Assist in the development of a resource file of enrichment materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency working with a culturally, ethnically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse school community is preferred.

Job Description

Under the general supervision of the principal and AVID coordinator and the immediate supervision of the AVID elective teacher, AVID Tutors assist identified students in academic subjects in order to develop habits of mind and higher standards of academic achievement among students which will increase postsecondary educational options upon high school graduation.

AVID Tutors are distinguished from other Tutors and Instructional Aides/Assistants in that AVID Tutors are trained in the use of AVID strategies to enhance academic performance of targeted high school students and serve as role models and mentors.

Compensation / Benefits:

RAVE Clerical Association Wage Group V: $22.01 - $24.69 Hourly - According to contractual agreement (based on 2026-27 contract)
