Job summary

City of Chicago is seeking a skilled Sheet Metal Worker to read blueprints, fabricate and install HVAC duct systems in city facilities, and ensure quality throughout fabrication and installation.

The role requires journeyman status or an approved apprenticeship, with experience in sheet metal work, welding, and related installations. The employee will work Mon–Fri in a facilities environment, and may perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

• US Dept of Labor registered sheet metal apprenticeship or journeyman status.
• Alternative: industry or company-sponsored apprenticeship plus two years journey-level experience.
• Six years journey-level experience in sheet metal fabrication, installation, and repair.

Responsibilities

• Reads blueprints, specs and work orders to plan installation methods.
• Fabricates, installs, and repairs HVAC duct systems in city facilities.
• Ensures adequate tools, equipment and materials at work sites.
• Performs layout using calculations and measuring devices.
• Cuts, bends and shapes sheet metal with power tools.
• Inspects fabrications and adjusts using grinders and other tools for finish quality.
• Joins sheets with welds, rivets or bolts to form ducts and components.
• Installs sheet metal parts and components, aligns and connects units.
• Drills holes and installs brackets and hangers for secure mounting.
• Operates hacksaws, punch presses, drill presses and welding equipment.
• Fabricates sheet metal parts for fleet vehicles as needed.
• Prepares work activity reports.
