Job summary

Garmin International is seeking a full-time Aviation Instructional Designer 2 at its U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area.

You will lead the design, prioritization, and development of training products for customers, guiding projects that maximize reach and impact across Garmin Aviation. You will develop low-to moderately complex web-based content, courseware, and multimedia aids, plan new pilot and maintenance training programs, and coordinate with SMEs and OEM partners to deliver

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher required with strong instructional design background.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience in aviation training or education.
  • Experience in developing aviation training programs and content for pilots, maintenance personnel, or related roles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of web-based content, interactive courseware, and multimedia materials.
  • Plan and develop pilot and maintenance training programs and syllabi for new avionics or services.
  • Coordinate with Garmin and OEM partners to support training programs.
  • Guide and mentor junior designers and developers on processes and tools.
  • Ensure training programs align with internal and external customer needs and timelines.

Job description

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Aviation Instructional Designer 2 at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the design, prioritization, and development of quality, timely, relevant, and engaging training products for customers. Designers play a key role in developing a full portfolio of training products, so Garmin is viewed as the unrivaled industry leader in quality products and support. This role guides the development of specific products and projects that maximize internal and external customer reach.

Essential Functions
  • Lead the development and organization of low-to-moderately complex web-based content, interactive courseware, multimedia visual aids, and other educational materials
  • Plan and develop low-to moderately complex new pilot and maintenance training programs including training syllabi and other products associated with the introduction of new avionics or services
  • Plan and develop projects to meet time and scope/quality objectives
  • Provide recommendations to refine and/or expand training programs and products to better support customers and the aviation community, broaden customer reach, and enhance Garmin Aviation efforts
  • Plan and develop training products tailored to Aviation Product Support needs
  • Assist in conducting continuous training needs analysis with leaders, managers, and subject matter experts across Garmin and the industry to determine internal and external training needs
  • Train other designers and developers on established processes/procedures, tools, and technology to meet instructional development goals
  • Partner with organizations and associates across Garmin to support Garmin Aviation, Aviation Support, and Aviation Training efforts
  • Coordinate with OEM avionics partners in support of OEM training programs involving Garmin avionics
  • Benchmark aviation and other industry training content development methods, standards, and practices
  • Ensure all customer (OEM) information and Garmin business information is maintained in strict confidence consistent with the associate’s contractual confidentiality obligations as well as the Proprietary Information/Confidentiality provisions set forth in Garmin’s Associate Handbook
  • Stay abreast of trends in aviation, avionics, adult education, and training industries
  • Flexibility to travel domestically or internationally (up to 25% of time)
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to performing the essential functions of this job
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of combined pilot, flight instructor, maintenance instructor, avionics maintenance, aircraft maintenance, or adult education experience
  • Internal candidates must have a minimum of 6 months as an Aviation Instructional Designer 1 or demonstrated performance as evaluated by a management panel
  • Must have training, technical publications, and/or education curriculum and content development experience
  • Demonstrated skills and/or previous experience in managing people, processes, and technology to meet organizational goals
  • Must be detail-oriented and work proactively and effectively with minimal supervision
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrates project management and organizational skills with a proven ability to effectively meet timelines and milestones
  • Possess a working knowledge of adult learning models
Desired Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in an aviation-related field, business management, engineering, adult education, or position-related field
  • Instructional Design and/or Instructional Developer experience at an aviation training provider
  • Broad airline, military, business, and/or general aviation fixed-wing or helicopter experience
  • Experience at a Garmin dealer or experience installing or maintaining Garmin avionics
  • Knowledge of Garmin and competitive products
  • Experience in designing interactive, multimedia training materials
  • Experience in designing 3D, AR/VR/XR, or other immersive products
  • Experience in game design
  • Practical experience in post-secondary or adult education
  • Must demonstrate effective presentation skills and public speaking ability
  • Must demonstrate effective verbal, written, interpersonal communication, and team building skills
  • Training experience with high profile clients and/or business partners
  • A & P mechanic
  • ASTM/NCATT AET certification with associated endorsements and/or avionics technician experience
  • Certified Flight Instructor, Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument, 1000+ flight hours, turbine aircraft experience, or type ratings
