AV Systems Specialist & Audio Engineer
Full-Time (12-month), Non-Exempt, Category 4
Department: Campus Production
Reports to: Director of Campus Production
Essential Functions
Live Event Production (Audio Engineer)
- Serve as lead A1 audio engineer for school-wide events including concerts, theatre productions, chapels, ceremonies and campus events. This role also includes supervising, performing, and instructing others in the duties of an A2 audio assistant.
- Coordinate, plan, and execute technical live production logistics including stage plots, input lists, setups, rehearsals, and live operation of AV systems.
- Collaborate with event organizers and stakeholders to elevate aesthetic, functional, and technical requirements for diverse event types.
- Set up and configure AV systems for campus events as needed (locations where there is no installed AV system).
Equipment / Venue Support
- Maintain the readiness of AV systems through executing preventative maintenance, repair and replacement plans for campus AV systems.
- Optimize AV system capabilities to ensure consistent, high-quality experiences for users, performers, and audiences.
- Identify needs for upgrades, repairs, or replacements and coordinate work with vendors and contractors as necessary
- Reduce reliance on outside contracts by building in-house capabilities
Cross Departmental Collaboration
- Provide AV production support to all departments as needed, including advancement, admissions, athletics, student life, spiritual life, administration, and others.
- Coordinate with Operations and CFM teams where event support needs intersect
- Advise in the design and integration of AV equipment and systems across campus
- Support the school’s mission and brand by ensuring events are technically polished and professionally presented
- Provide support to the entire Campus Production team on special projects or operational tasks, as needed
Student Mentorship / Educational Integration
- Mentor students in technical aspects of AV production (specifically audio)
- Provide structured, hands-on experiences for students in collaboration with the Campus Production team
- Create opportunities for event organizers and students to practice and experiment in event spaces during scheduled downtime to better prepare them for performances
- Train performing arts faculty on basic use of AV systems in their classrooms and rehearsal spaces
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Expert knowledge of audio systems and front-of-house (FOH) audio mixing for live events. Knowledge of and experience with monitor mixing for live events a plus.
- Expert knowledge in wireless frequency coordination
- Able to manage and maintain a wide range of professional AV platforms and equipment, including but not limited to Q-Sys, Shure, Blackmagic Design, Avid, Dante, L-Acoustics, and entertainment network hardware
- Excellent troubleshooting and improvisational skills under live conditions
- Strong organizational ability for asset tracking, documentation, and scheduling
- Commitment to safety protocols and best practices in live event environments
- Ability to lift and move heavy equipment up to 50 pounds
- First Aid and CPR certification required (can certify while in the role)
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends according to school event schedule
Education and/or Experience
- Degree or certificate in technical theatre, live event production, audio engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience as an audio engineer for performing arts and/or live events, including live sound engineering, theatrical lighting, technical direction, and/or venue management
- Prior experience in K-12, higher education, or similar educational environments preferred
- Demonstrated experience mentoring or leading students is strongly preferred
