Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in biology and completion of an accredited pathologist assistant program.
• Pathologist Assistant certification preferred.
• Completion of medical training or related doctoral program may be substituted for Pathologist Assistant certification.
• Professional knowledge and high analytic ability for postmortem and tissue examinations.
• Knowledge of anatomic pathology computer system functions.
• Ability to conduct gross dissection procedures with surgical instruments.
• Interpersonal and verbal communication skills to interact with pathologists and students.
• Written communication skills to prepare case summaries and reports.

Responsibilities

• Processes surgical pathology specimens including fixing, cutting, photographing, and sectioning.
• Performs postmortem examination under supervision of the pathologist.
• Teaches and orients residents and medical students.
• Maintains inventory and equipment, including preventive maintenance.
• Notifies supervisors when work backs up to ensure workflow efficiency.
• Maintains clean and safe work environment and properly functioning equipment.
• Monitors hours and activities of grossing staff.
• Performs other duties such as accessioning, billing, and coding.
