Job summary

Motional is seeking an Onboard Vehicle Network Engineer to lead design, evolution, and maintenance of the onboard vehicle network architecture. The role blends software engineering with system-level networking to ensure high-throughput, low-latency, deterministic communication across compute nodes, sensors, and controllers.

You will define topology, protocols, and diagnostics, write tools for routing and monitoring, and collaborate with hardware, Linux, and autonomy software teams.

Qualifications

• Strong background as a Software Engineer, able to write, debug, and maintain production code.
• Deep understanding of embedded network architectures and system-level communication flows.
• Hands-on experience with networking protocols and standards (Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, CAN/CAN-FD).
• Proficiency in a modern language (C++ preferred).
• Experience designing network security policies, QoS, and logical network isolation.
• Ability to build software tools for network telemetry, packet inspection, and diagnostics.
• Experience collaborating across hardware, embedded Linux, systems, and application teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve onboard vehicle network topology for current and next-generation platforms.
• Define and implement network protocol stacks and messaging layers across compute nodes, sensors, MCUs, and actuators.
• Develop software and tooling for routing, monitoring, fault detection, diagnostics, and failover handling.
• Collaborate with hardware, platform, and autonomy teams to evaluate network components.
• Establish QoS policies, network isolation, and latency/bandwidth constraints.
• Build telemetry and monitoring tools to observe network health and performance.
• Diagnose and resolve complex system-level networking issues.
• Define maintenance, provisioning, and OTA firmware update strategies for switches and interfaces.
• Contribute to roadmaps for next-generation onboard networking.
