Amazon.com Services LLC is seeking an Applied Scientist II—Robotics & Physical AI within the Worldwide Sustainability team in Seattle to build and operate the first autonomous materials discovery laboratory.

The role blends robotics with Physical AI, designing autonomous workflows that integrate robotic platforms, instruments, and AI-driven hypothesis generation into a closed-loop discovery pipeline for real chemistry with real hardware.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of building models for business applications or related field experience.
• PhD, or Master’s degree with 4+ years in CS, CE, ML or related field.
• Experience with patents or publications at top-tier conferences or journals.
• Proficiency in Java, C++, Python or related language.
• Experience in algorithms, data structures, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing.

Responsibilities

• Develop, train, and benchmark robotic manipulation policies for materials synthesis and characterization.
• Design and execute sim-to-real transfer strategies including domain randomization and physics parameter tuning.
• Integrate robotic platforms and laboratory instruments into automated workflows via APIs.
• Architect policy training pipelines combining teleoperation data, synthetic demonstrations, RL, and imitation learning.
• Build production-grade agentic runtime systems for unattended experimental sessions.
• Design autonomous experimental campaigns applying active learning or Bayesian optimization.
• Drive technical design reviews and set scientific direction for the autonomous lab platform.
