Job summary

The Hampton VA Medical Center Pharmacy Service is seeking a certified pharmacy technician above the GS-6 level. This position operates autonomously with independent judgment and performs a full range of duties in an outpatient setting.

Responsibilities include dispensing outpatient prescriptions, preparing medications for pharmacist verification, maintaining orderly work areas, and using automated dispensing equipment.

Qualifications

• Certification: must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification (PTCB or ExCPT/NHA).
• KSAs: knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, ability to train staff and students.
• Citizenship: US citizenship required; non-citizens allowed only per VA policy.

Responsibilities

• Interpret, fill, and package outpatient prescriptions for window and mail.
• Prepares prescriptions with appropriate medications for pharmacist verification.
• Maintains clean and organized work areas; ensures proper stock storage per USP/VA guidance.
• Operates automation dispensing equipment and reports malfunctions promptly.
• Serve as first‑line contact with healthcare team and veterans; handle telephone requests.
• Attend orientation, training, and mandatory programs; participate in competency assessments.
