Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky is seeking an ASE-certified Automotive Technician III in Frankfort, KY to perform complex repairs, maintenance, and diagnostics in a dedicated fleet shop. The role involves mentoring less experienced mechanics and ensuring high-quality repairs on powertrain, brake, electrical, and HVAC systems.

The position requires five years of automotive or equipment repair experience, a valid driver's license, and ASE certifications in three medium/heavy test areas including diesel

Qualifications

  • High school graduate.
  • Five years of automotive and/or equipment repair experience.
  • Vocational or technical training can substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must possess ASE certifications in any three medium/heavy truck or automobile test series, one of which must be diesel engines, gasoline engines, or engine repair; and ASE AC recovery certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex automotive mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, and diagnostics in a repair environment.
  • Provides senior-grade training and mentorship to less experienced mechanics.
  • Observes and informs the shop supervisor about repair quality.
  • Performs major mechanical repairs and diagnostics on powertrain systems.
  • Removes or replaces major assemblies such as engines, transmissions, and drive axles.
  • Diagnoses and repairs automotive systems and electronics while mentoring others.
  • Maintains expertise in brake systems and related components.
  • Troubleshoots drivability issues including drivetrain and suspension.
  • Performs HVAC service and repairs using current service tools.
  • Performs preventive maintenance like oil changes, inspections, tire rotations and balancing.

Description

The Office of Fleet Management is looking for an ASE Certified automotive mechanical repair technician.Below is a summary of the responsibilities and knowledge needed for this position.

  • Performs complex automotive mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, diagnostics in an automotiverepair and maintenance garage environment.
  • Provides senior grade training assistance and mentorship to less experienced automotive mechanics.
  • Observes and advises shop supervisor of the quality of repairs being performed.
  • Performs major mechanical repairs and computer diagnostics on powertrain management systems.
  • Conducts the removal, mechanical repair or replacement of major mechanical component assemblies such asengines, transmissions, transfer cases and drive axle assemblies.
  • Performs precise diagnosis and mechanical repairs on automotive system modules and electronicsutilizing the most current diagnostic equipment, utilize their knowledge and experience to mentor, train andassist all other team members when needed.
  • Required to possess expert level brake systems knowledge and skills.
  • Performs accurate analysis and mechanical repairs to correct automotive drivability issues includingdrivetrain and driveline components and suspension.
  • Performs accurate troubleshooting repair and service on automotive heating ventilation and airconditioning systems utilizing the most current service and test equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance procedures including oil changes, vehicle inspections, tire rotations,tire mounting and balancing.

Skills and abilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Extensive automotive mechanical repair experience with ASE certifications
  • Good computer skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have five years of automotive and/or equipment repair technical experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Vocational or technical school training in automotive/truck repair or a related area will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this classification. Must be Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified in any three of the medium/ heavy truck or automobile test series, one of which must be diesel engines, gasoline engines, or engine repair.
