Job description

Job DescriptionJob Description

I am Michael from Reliable Auto Repair in San Jose CA. I am looking to hire a full-time automotive mechanic. I am writing this from the heart, no weirdo corporate talk, just a small business looking for the right people!

I have divided this post into two different segments: who I am looking to hire as a person, and who I am looking to hire as a mechanic. The examples I am using are from real experiences I’ve had as a result of being in the automotive industry for a long time and hopefully this finds the right person!

WHO I NEED AS A PERSON:

· Someone who is consistently on time.

o Showing up on time shows that you have respect for not only others, but also yourself, and that you wish to be viewed as someone that your coworkers and customers can count on.

o I’ve had to fire full grown adults for not being able to manage their time properly. There is something heartbreaking about asking a 42-year-old if they forgot to set their alarm – lack of timeliness makes the whole shop look incompetent.

· Someone who is honest.

o We are a very family focused shop, and being a deceitful person goes against everything we stand for. I love being friendly with employees, taking an interest in what they have going in their lives, and having their back if they need it. If I tell you truthfully that I can make a promise or commitment, I won’t let you down.

o I’ve had mechanics lie about needing money or time off for funerals, family emergencies, you name it. We are looking for moral upstanding people who will not compromise their character for money or convenience. Trust is hard to earn and easy to lose.

· Someone who cares.

o We help out hundreds of households with their vehicles in the bay area. It matters to us how our name and workmanship is perceived, and every single day is an opportunity to remind customers why they come here. Treat customer’s car problems like they are your own personal car’s problems and you will succeed.

o I need mechanics that have pride in their work and too much self-esteem to be the 45-minute cigarette and coffee dude that has the hustle of a low-pressure rusted water hose with water dribbling out of it after sitting in the sun all summer. Our reputation is only as good as our employees.

WHO I NEED AS A MECHANIC:

I need you to have your own tools, as well as a certain degree of technical skills and knowledge. Simply stating “I need a good mechanic” is not descriptive enough, so I have listed some specific things that I would be curious to know if you could accomplish and would give me a good idea of your technical abilities. We work on everything so let me know if you can do any of the following:

· Replace a chain driven water pump on a 3.5 Ford motor in around 7 hours.

· Replace a valve cover on a N51/N52 BMW motor in around 4 hours.

· Change the motor oil and filter, remove four tires, measure brakes, and reset the maintenance light on most cars in around 30 minutes.

· Replace the transmission on a mid-2000’s four-wheel GM in around 5 hours.

If you are more inclined for diagnostics and electrical or have your L1, A6, A8, or smog license please let me know!

WHAT AN AVERAGE DAY LOOKS LIKE:

· Come in Monday thru Friday at 8:00 AM.

· Attend a 5-minute morning meeting where we go over what work is coming in for the day, and share anything that anyone needs help with.

· Fix cars until 12 pm.

· Lunch and rest from 12pm until 1 pm.

· Fix cars until 5 pm.

· Park cars inside the garage and go home.

BENEFITS AND PAY:

We offer full dental, medical, and vision coverage, matching 401k, and we offer a monthly tool allowance so that you can invest in upgrading your equipment.

Pay starts at a minimum of $30.00 / hour with unlimited bonus. I am not paying $40.00 an hour for someone to change oil, but I’m also not going to offer you $26.00 an hour to diagnose a gateway ECU communication malfunction on a 7 series. $30.00 an hour starts the conversation; how high it goes is completely up to what you can do.

How the bonus works:

You work for 8 hours each day. If you complete more than 8 hours of work, you get paid extra. If an engine job is 14 hours and you finish it in 8 hours, you bank 6 extra hours for the day. Whatever extra hours you have at the end of two weeks is multiplied by your hourly wage and you get a bonus check in that amount. You are guaranteed 40 hour weekly paychecks no matter what, the bonus is there to motivate you and give you the opportunity to make as much extra money as you’re willing to work hard for.

Example:

If you make $30 an hour and bust out 60 hours of work in one 40-hour work week, you get 20 extra hours as a bonus.

20 x $30 = $600 extra each week.

That’s $2,400 extra each month.

In one year, that’s $28,800 extra.

IN CONCLUSION:

I want mechanics who are looking for long term employment, are interested in working hard, and hold positive principles as human beings. Come make money, be surrounded by hard working people that value their professions and take their reputation seriously, and reach out to me soon. I look forward to speaking with you!
