Program Overview

This automotive OEM technical training program develops, standardizes, and delivers high-quality learning content for dealership technicians and shop foremen. The program translates complex vehicle systems, diagnostics, and emerging technologies into practical instructor-led, virtual, self-study, and web-based learning experiences. Learning solutions emphasize hands-on application, technical accuracy, interactive design, and continuous improvement through close collaboration with technical trainers, academy leaders, and subject-matter experts.

Position Summary

The Automotive Technical Training Curriculum Developer is a senior instructional designer who designs, develops, updates, and supports technical learning solutions for an automotive OEM. The role creates instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training, self-study programs, web-based training, launch training, technical graphics, video, assessments, and supporting digital assets. The developer partners with curriculum designers, technical instructors, subject-matter experts, product support, publications, information technology, and other stakeholders to convert technical information into engaging, learner-centered training for dealership technicians and shop foremen.

This position combines instructional-design capability with hands-on automotive technical expertise. The successful candidate can independently research vehicle systems, use diagnostic and service-information resources, disassemble and reassemble vehicle components when needed, facilitate training, and manage multiple deliverables from discovery through pilot and final release.

The role has strategic purview over the OEM curriculum portfolio, which includes multiple self-study programs, new instructor-led courses, web-based courses, course updates, new self-study programs developed from scratch, and continuing on-site OEM academy support each year. Additional projects may arise as products, technologies, or business priorities change.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop new and updated technical curriculum for instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, self-study, web-based, and vehicle-launch training programs.
  • Develop ILT courses that prioritize hands-on, exercise-driven learning while integrating classroom or virtual instruction, interactive PDF presentation materials, and technician reference guides that support typed learner notes on iPad devices.
  • Create course deliverables including instructor guides, technician reference guides, presentations, course outlines, objectives, storyboards, job aids, video and voiceover scripts, graphics, digital media, and production-direction notes.
  • Develop, revise, and enter post-course assessments in the learning management system assessment tool; ensure assessments align to course objectives and revised content.
  • Build SCORM-compliant web-based training using Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise 360, including learner bookmarking and meaningful interactive learning elements.
  • Create original technical graphics, images, video, and audio assets when needed to ensure accuracy, relevance, and alignment with automotive OEM standards.
  • Develop self-study programs from supplied source material, including translation and editing for U.S. market use, and independently develop self-study programs from concept through final PDF when required.
  • Review existing curriculum, identify duplicate or overlapping objectives across courses, define appropriate objective ownership, and apply sound instructional-design methodology to course development.
  • Research new vehicles, major product changes, diagnostic procedures, systems, and technologies using available vehicle, service, diagnostic, and technical-information resources.
  • Use hands-on automotive skills to inspect, disassemble, and reassemble vehicle products and systems as necessary to validate training content and create accurate learning exercises.
  • Collaborate with technical instructors, curriculum designers, subject-matter experts, product support, help-line, publications, information technology, and other stakeholders to define learning requirements, goals, objectives, and course flow.
  • Participate in start-of-work and research activities, course reviews, pilots, train-the-trainer events, and independent course facilitation as required.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with on-site and remote partner departments; represent the academy or training organization in cross-functional engagements.
  • Support iPad-based learning delivery by recommending and assisting with iPad-cart administration and deployment activities, including Apple Configurator functions and supervised-device application or operating-system updates as assigned.
  • Maintain a searchable archive of curriculum deliverables and source materials so assets can be reused across training teams and automotive OEM groups.
