Job description

Automotive Service Worker (ASW) - Job Description

Under supervision, Automotive Service Workers (ASWs) assist in and perform automotive maintenance, inspection, and repair work. They operate various motor vehicles, tow and relocate vehicles, disconnect batteries, and perform maintenance and repairs. Responsibilities include cleaning vehicles, assisting in loading/unloading, operating motor equipment, and managing tools and supplies.

  1. Perform automotive maintenance such as preventive services, inspections, tire changes, lubrication, and oil changes.
  2. Clean and polish vehicles, including interiors.
  3. Dispense gasoline and oil; check and refill fluids.
  4. Assist with tune-ups and repairs, including engine parts, drive trains, transmissions, and systems like heating, cooling, brakes, and lighting.
  5. Operate vehicles to test repairs; transport vehicles as needed.
  6. Dismantle vehicles under supervision.
  7. Maintain vehicle inventory and update service records.
Minimum Qualifications

For Level I:

  1. Two years of full-time automotive maintenance experience, or
  2. Graduation from a trade, vocational, or technical school in automotive maintenance, or
  3. An Associate Degree in automotive technology, or
  4. Equivalent combination of education and experience, with six months credited per year of relevant education.

License Requirements: Must possess a valid NY Motor Vehicle Driver License. Certain positions require a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with specific endorsements. Candidates may qualify with a learner's permit and must obtain the full license within 180 days.

For Level II:

  1. Two years of full-time automotive maintenance experience, or
  2. Graduation from a trade, vocational, or technical school, or
  3. An Associate Degree in automotive technology, or
  4. Equivalent education and experience, plus one year of service as an Level I ASW or an additional year of automotive experience.

License requirements are similar to Level I.
