Job Opportunity: Automotive Repair Technician I

Norfolk, Virginia, known for its vibrant waterfront and rich cultural scene, is seeking an experienced Automotive Repair Technician I to join the Fleet Management division of the Department of General Services. This division manages over 2,000 city vehicles and equipment, supporting essential city services such as public safety and utilities.

The successful candidate will perform vehicle maintenance tasks including oil changes, fluid level checks, tire rotations, and replacing worn parts like brake pads and sensors. Responsibilities also include diagnosing vehicle issues, performing repairs according to manufacturer specifications, and communicating with clients about automotive problems and repairs.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Perform preventative maintenance and repairs through inspections, performance evaluations, diagnostics, and part replacements.
2. Diagnose and repair vehicles using appropriate tools and equipment.
3. Retrieve city vehicles, tow as needed, clean shop areas, order parts, and log information into systems.
4. Inspect and prepare new vehicles and equipment for service.
5. Utilize basic computer software, including Microsoft Windows and Fleet Management software.
6. Lift up to 75 pounds and work in potentially dirty or hazardous environments.
7. Read work orders, manuals, maps, instructions, and diagnostic equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least one year of automotive maintenance and repair experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• ASE Certification.
• VA State Safety Inspection license.
• Vocational or technical school education.

Additional Requirements:

• Valid Driver's License.
• Within six months of hire, obtain a valid CDL (Class A) Driver's License.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM, 40 hours per week.
