Job description

Those hired divide their time between formal schooling where they are successfully completing the coursework requirements to earn an auto technician designation from an approved partner program (maintain a 2.5 Grade Point Average), and closely supervised work performance in the Public Works' vehicle maintenance facilities as a way to develop well-rounded skills necessary to become an Automotive Mechanic with the City of Minneapolis

***The individual hired into this position will be required to sign a contract that states they will complete their schooling and then work for the City for three (3) years after finishing school.

The City will cover the cost of schooling.

This position currently works on-site only.

Attend school and work for the Employer for up to 40 hours per week at a level that meets or exceeds expectations:

1. Regularly attend classes as scheduled by the school and the trainee supervisor.

2. Maintain a full-time course load as established by the educational institution.

3. Maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.

4. Comply with all Employer's rules, policies and procedures.

5. Assist with performing routine vehicle and truck maintenance activities as assigned and under the direction and supervision of the Foreman and/or Automotive Mechanic. Within the scope of current and active training curriculum, duties may include:

  • Assist with checking and changing engine fluids and filters.
  • Assist with performing basic diagnostic activities.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities such as checking belts and fluid levels.
  • Assist Automotive Mechanics as requested.
  • Assist with the inventory and securing of City-owned tools and equipment.

6. Assist shop repair personnel as directed and needed with inventorying parts on hand

7. Check, change and repair tires on vehicles and trucks

8. Wash and clean vehicles as needed.

9. Maintain, repair, and clean shop equipment.

10. Apply the learning principles taught in the city-sponsored automotive mechanic trainee education program

Minimum Education:High School Graduation or GED; and must maintain satisfactory progress toward graduation from a pre-selected partner automotive technician trade program within specified time limits for continuing employment.

Minimum Experience: N/A

Licenses/Certifications:Valid Class D Driver's License at time of Hire and Must obtain a Class B with air brake endorsement within 1 year of hire.

Equivalency:An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience 100%. It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score 80% on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

Background Check

The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Drug and Alcohol Testing

All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Medical Exam

After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening.

Union Representation

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the Construction Equipment Operators and Mechanics Unit, IUOE Local #49

Eligible List Statement

The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.

Interview Selection

The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

1. Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory progress toward graduation from a pre-selected automotive technician trade program within specified time limits.

2. Improving knowledge of vehicle engine repair, which includes diesel, heavy-duty vehicles and/or construction equipment.

3. Improving knowledge of the tools, methods and techniques applicable to the repair and maintenance of automotive, small engine and heavy equipment (garbage and dump trucks, loaders, etc)

4.Working knowledge of computers, ability to use the internet to research vehicle information.

5. Verbal and written communication skills using the English language.

6.Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions.

7.Physical ability to lift heavy objects.
