General Statement of Duties
This employee performs journey-level work by troubleshooting and repairing automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, specialized equipment such as fire pumpers, and non-automotive equipment. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

Knowledge Of
- The design and function of two and four cycle internal combustion engines and diesel engines.
- All of the various systems associated with automotive equipment, including fuel carburetion, fuel pumps, fuel injection, brakes, steering, transmissions, suspension, electrical, cooling, lubrication, air conditioning systems, ABS brake systems, and hydraulics.
- Types and characteristics of various fluids used in automotive components.
- Mechanics hand tools and standard trade practices and procedures.
- Occupational hazards and safe work practices when working with automotive equipment and repair tools.
- Testing instruments, such as voltmeters, multimeters, etc.
- Operating and repair characteristics of automotive equipment such as cars and trucks.
- Battery charging procedures.
- Basic electrical component installation procedures.
Skill To
- Operate basic PC programs.
- Diagnose problems using equipment, experience, and test instruments.
- Perform work on components including cleaning diesel fuel systems, repairing carburetors, hydraulic systems, and electrical components.
- Use mechanics hand tools and test equipment like pullers, gauges, meters, micrometers, timing lights, etc.
- Drive a motor vehicle to transport oneself on streets and highways.
Ability To
- Detect unsafe work behavior.
- Decide if a component needs cleaning, replacement, or repair using service manuals.
- Improvise with available materials in emergencies.

Required Education And Experience
Resume and Driver License must be attached; application will be rejected without them.
Applicants must have two (2) years of paid automotive repair experience. Certification from ASE and EVT is desirable.
OR
Applicants must have two (2) years of experience as an Automotive Mechanic Helper with the City of Cincinnati.
Other Requirements
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License or obtain during probation.
- Willingness to work shifts outside normal hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- May need to lift over 50 pounds.
- Must have or obtain necessary tools for the job.
Military Education & Experience
Military training may substitute for college coursework or apprenticeship on a case-by-case basis.
Physical and Working Conditions
Primarily in a garage with exposure to weather, noise, dirt, fumes, and confined spaces.
Examples of Work Performed
- Diagnose equipment malfunctions and determine repairs.
- Repair engine components, perform tune-ups, overhaul and modify equipment.
- Drive service vehicles to perform emergency repairs or tow equipment.
- Test and evaluate batteries and clean work areas.
- Attend training on automotive maintenance.
