This employee performs journey level work by troubleshooting and repairing automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, specialized equipment such as fire pumpers, and non-automotive equipment. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:
- The design and function of two and four cycle internal combustion engines and diesel engines.
- All systems associated with automotive equipment, including fuel carburetion, fuel pumps, fuel injection, brakes, steering, transmissions, suspension, electrical, cooling, lubrication, air conditioning systems, ABS brake systems, and hydraulics.
- Types and characteristics of various fluids used in automotive components.
- Mechanic's hand tools and standard trade practices and procedures.
- Occupational hazards and safe work practices when working with automotive equipment and repair tools.
- Testing instruments such as voltmeters, multimeters, etc.
- Operating and repair characteristics of automotive equipment like cars and trucks.
- Battery charging procedures.
- Basic electrical component installation procedures.
Skill to:
- Operate basic PC programs.
- Diagnose problems using knowledge, experience, and test equipment.
- Perform work on components including cleaning diesel fuel systems, repairing carburetors, hydraulic systems, and installing electrical components.
- Use mechanic's hand tools and test equipment such as pullers, gauges, meters, micrometers, timing lights, etc.
- Drive a motor vehicle to transport oneself on streets and highways.
Ability to:
- Detect unsafe work behaviors.
- Decide if a component needs cleaning, replacement, or repair based on manuals and guidelines.
- Improvise using available materials in emergencies.
- Plan and organize work efficiently, including ordering parts in advance.
- Follow department practices, policies, and safety regulations.
- Understand and apply mechanical principles.
- Write clear reports and forms.
- Read and interpret test results, schematics, manuals, and instructions.

- Work in awkward positions such as kneeling, stooping, or lying on back for extended periods.

Open Qualifications: Applicants must have two (2) years of paid automotive repair experience. Certification from ASE and EVT is desirable.
Promotional Qualifications: Applicants must have two (2) years as an Automotive Mechanic Helper with the City of Cincinnati.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License or obtain one during probation.
- Willingness to work shifts outside normal hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- May need to lift over 50 pounds.
- Must have or obtain a tool set necessary for the job.
MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION
Military education and experience may substitute for college coursework or apprenticeship training based on ACE recommendations.
Work is primarily in a garage with exposure to noise, dirt, fumes, and confined spaces.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Diagnose equipment malfunctions and determine necessary repairs or adjustments.
- Repair engine and components such as carburetors, fuel injection, cooling, and suspension systems.
- Perform tune-ups on various engines and equipment.
- Overhaul or modify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic units on trucks and heavy equipment.
- Drive service vehicles to repair sites or tow inoperative equipment.
- Test and evaluate batteries, perform cleaning or recharging as needed.
- Maintain a clean work environment and attend training sessions.
- Identify and report unsafe practices and conditions.
