Job summary

City of Amarillo is seeking a Mechanic Apprentice to perform lubrication, fuel, and repair work on city vehicles and heavy equipment. The role operates with limited supervision, including after-hours and on-call rotations, and requires readiness for evenings, weekends, and inclement weather.

The ideal candidate holds a high school diploma, at least one year of related experience, and must obtain a State Inspection License plus a Texas Class C Driver’s License.

Qualifications

• Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year of related experience in Auto Mechanics or servicing vehicles, including one year as a Serviceman.
• Must be able to obtain a State Inspection License and possess a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Perform lubrication, fuel, and basic repairs on automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
• Maintain service records and issue fuel/oil tickets.
• Repair tires, balance tires, and perform minor repairs as directed.
• Operate a mobile service unit and respond to after-hours calls on a rotating basis.
• Train to overhaul engines, transmissions, brakes, and various subsystems.
• Ensure safety and cleanliness of the garage environment.
