The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation is seeking an Automotive Mechanic to maintain and repair a wide range of vehicles and equipment used in transportation operations across the state.

You will perform preventive maintenance, diagnose and repair engines and electrical systems, conduct safety inspections, provide field service, and keep accurate repair records. This full-time role requires a PA Class C license and a Class 1 inspection certificate; bring your own toolbox.

Qualifications

  • Four years of automotive mechanic experience or completion of an approved apprenticeship.
  • Knowledge of vehicle systems and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read manuals and document maintenance activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment to keep systems running smoothly.
  • Repair engines, cooling systems, suspensions, electrical and driveline components.
  • Conduct official safety inspections and ensure compliance with state standards.
  • Provide field service and perform repairs in field environments.
  • Maintain equipment records, prepare reports, and assist with parts identification.
  • Support other mechanics with major repairs as needed.

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing a wide variety of vehicles, construction equipment, and powered tools that support transportation operations across the Commonwealth. The work helps ensure that essential machinery stays safe, reliable, and ready to use. As an Automotive Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:



  • Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine servicing of vehicles and equipment to keep systems operating smoothly

  • System Repairs: Repair engines, cooling systems, suspension components, electrical systems, and driveline parts

  • Safety Inspections: Complete official inspections, apply required documentation, and ensure compliance with state standards

  • Field Service: Provide emergency road service and make necessary adjustments or repairs in field environments

  • Record Keeping: Maintain equipment records, prepare reports, and assist with identifying needed parts and supplies

  • Team Support: Demonstrate repair methods and assist other mechanics with major repairs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:


  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS


Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:


  • Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; or

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship; or

  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.


Special Requirements:


  • This position requires possession of a current and valid Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license.

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class 1 Inspection Mechanic certificate or equivalent that allows inspection for Class 1 vehicles.


Additional Requirements:


  • You will be responsible for providing your own mechanics toolbox and basic tool set.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
