Automotive Machinist Assistant Supervisor - Fleet Management - Office of the City Administrator (7315)

Role overview

Under general supervision, performs skilled auto machinist work related to the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of automotive equipment. Exercises work direction over a small team of journeyman craftsmen and servicemen, and performs related duties as required.

Key responsibilities

1. Participate in and assign work to subordinate craftsmen engaged in overhaul, reconditioning, and repair of engines and automotive components.
2. Inspect, test, and review vehicle maintenance and repairs to ensure compliance with standards; approve completed work.
3. Maintain records of equipment mileage and service times for planning maintenance.
4. Inspect incoming equipment to assess damage and coordinate necessary repairs.
5. Determine and order parts and materials needed for repairs; maintain materials records and recommend shop equipment upgrades.
6. Operate shop machinery such as valve facing machines, honing machines, grinders, and other tools for maintenance and repair tasks.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. or High School Proficiency Examination).
• Seven (7) years of journey-level experience or apprenticeship as an automotive machinist or heavy-duty mechanic, involving disassembly, repair, overhaul, and installation of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic assemblies in heavy-duty and off-road vehicles, including use of machine tools like valve re-facers, hydraulic presses, lathes, and grinders.
• Possession of a valid Class C driver license at application; ability to obtain a Class B license and Medical Certificate at appointment. Some positions may require a Class A license within 12 months.

Additional information

This is a Temporary Provisional position, excluding from the Civil Service examination process, serving at the discretion of the Department Head. Provisional appointees must participate in and pass a civil service exam for permanent status within three years.
