Automotive Machinist Assistant Supervisor - Fleet Management - Office of the City Administrator (7315)

The Fleet Management Department (also known as “Central Shops”) provides fleet services to over 70 City departments with a combined municipal fleet of approximately 8,000 units. Central Shops is responsible for asset management, maintenance and repairs, motor pools, fueling services, vehicle acquisitions and disposals, equipment specification writing, fueling, and more. Central Shops operates six maintenance and repair facilities across the City and maintains and repairs various types of vehicles and fleet equipment, ranging from passenger vehicles to highly specialized equipment like fire engines and street sweepers.

Appointment Type: This is a Temporary Provisional (TPV) position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process. It is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate in and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process to attain permanent status. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Under general supervision, performs skilled auto machinist work related to the major maintenance, repair, and overhaul of automotive equipment; exercises work direction over a small group of subordinate journeyman craftsmen and servicemen; and performs related duties as required.

  1. Participates in and assigns work to subordinate journeyman craftsmen engaged in the major overhaul, reconditioning, and repair of engines and other automotive components.
  2. Inspects, tests, and reviews maintenance and repair of vehicles to ensure conformance with instructions and standards; approves completed jobs prior to release.
  3. Maintains records of equipment mileage and service times for planning maintenance.
  4. Inspects incoming equipment to assess damage and arranges repairs.
  5. Determines parts and materials needed for repairs, orders them, and ensures their receipt meets needs; maintains material records and recommends new shop equipment.
  6. Operates shop equipment and machine tools such as valve facing and reseating machines, honing machines, pedestal grinders, power hack saws, brake riveters, drill presses, generator restarters, and other tools related to maintenance and repair work.

Minimum qualifications for employment include:

  • Education: Completion of High School or equivalent (G.E.D. or High School Proficiency Examination)
  • Experience: A total of seven (7) years of journey-level experience and/or apprenticeship as an automotive machinist or heavy-duty mechanic, involving disassembling, repairing, overhauling, and installing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic assemblies in heavy-duty and off-road vehicles. Experience must include the use of machine tools such as valve re-facers, hydraulic and drill presses, lathes, and grinders.
  • License and Certification: Possession of at least a Class C (or III) driver license at application; ability to obtain a Class B (or II) driver license and Medical Certificate at appointment. Some positions may require obtaining a Class A (or I) driver license within twelve months, with continued maintenance of the license as a condition of employment.
