Job summary

Dallas College seeks a dynamic Lab Specialist to support automotive labs within one of its Schools. This on-site role will maintain labs, manage tools and equipment, and coordinate vendor interactions to ensure safe, productive learning environments for students and staff.

Openings are for on-site positions with potential for hybrid work after six months based on policy. Strong communication and customer-service skills are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations and maintenance of laboratories, specialized classrooms, learning laboratories, toolrooms and equipment in support of courses and programs.
• Promote safety through laboratory practices and train students on safety procedures and hazardous materials handling.
• Maintain MSDS information for chemicals and materials.
• Perform inventory and maintain accurate records of equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Coordinate with vendors for quotes and purchases.
• Partner with faculty to coordinate learning lab support services.

• Monitor students in the computer lab during open lab periods.

Position Summary

Dallas College seeks a dynamic individual to play an importantrole in the operation of the one of the seven new Dallas Collegeacademic Schools (the Schools). The Lab Specialist will servewithin one of the Dallas College academic Schools. Dallas Collegeis establishing the Schools with a new, ambitious academicframework to ensure the Schools align with the North Texas region’sworkforce and industry needs to ensure graduates’ success in theircareers.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge about laboratory operations, laboratory informationsystems (software and hardware), and laboratory equipment in one ormore discipline areas within the School.

• Advanced ability to use computer technology to access data,maintain records, generate reports and communicate with others.

• Must have strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task,detail-oriented approach to work, strong decision-making skills,good follow-up, ability to complete tasks.

• Utilizes excellent interpersonal, listening, oral and writtencommunication skills in order to communicate effectively withinternal and external stakeholders and constituents in the DallasCollege community network.

Key Responsibilities

• Responsible for daily operations and maintenance oflaboratories, specialized classrooms, learning laboratories, toolrooms and equipment in support of courses and programs.

• Promote and support safety through laboratory safe practices andprovide training for students on safety procedures and hazardousmaterials handling.

• Maintains all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) informationforall chemicals and materials as required.

• Responsible for performing periodic inventory and maintainingaccurate inventory for equipment, tools, materials andsupplies.

• Receives, stores, and issues tools, supplies or equipmentassociated with courses or programs.

• Maintains log of tools, materials and equipment distributed andreturned.

• Responsible for security of assigned inventory.

• Responsible for maintaining tools, equipment, and informationsystems in good working condition and ensuring that repairs arescheduled and completed in a timely manner; perform minor repairsand calibrations as needed.

• Responsible for scheduling preventative maintenance of equipmentand recommend replacement or new equipment acquisitions.

• Schedule repairs and prepares and tracks purchaserequisitions.

• Serve as primary point of contact for vendors for quotes andpurchases.

• For learning labs, partner with faculty to coordinateappropriate learning lab support services including studentorientation and training.

• Responsible for troubleshooting lab hardware/softwareissues.

• Monitor students in the computer lab during open labperiods.

• Assist in the monitoring of lab activities to ensure a safe andclean learning environment.

• Serves as a resource to students, staff and faculty in area ofspecialization.

• Monitor and control budget expenditures within allocation.

• Hire, supervise, and evaluate lab assistants and assignedstaff.

• Determines work schedules and assignments in collaboration withfaculty.

• Keeps up to date on the professional and technical aspects onthe job.

• Utilizes excellent communication skills when interacting withinternal/external stakeholders and constituents within the DallasCollege community network.

• Provide excellent customer service.

• Completes required Dallas College Professional Developmenttraining hours per academic year.

• Perform other job duties as assigned.

What You'll Do

As the Automotive Lab Specialist, you will:

Laboratory Operations & Equipment Management

• Support the daily operation of automotive laboratories, toolrooms, and specialized instructional spaces.

• Maintain, organize, and manage automotive tools, diagnosticequipment, training systems, materials, and supplies.

• Perform inventory tracking and maintain accurate records ofequipment, tools, and consumables.

• Receive, store, distribute, and monitor the return of tools andequipment.

• Ensure lab equipment remains operational through preventivemaintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and coordination ofrepairs.

• Recommend replacement equipment and new equipment purchases tosupport instructional needs.

Student & Faculty Support

• Partner with faculty to prepare labs and instructionalactivities that enhance student learning.

• Train students on proper use of tools, equipment, and safetyprocedures.

• Serve as a technical resource for students, faculty, and staffwithin automotive programs.

• Support open lab activities and assist in maintaining anengaging, productive learning environment.

Safety & Compliance

• Champion a culture of safety by ensuring compliance withlaboratory safety standards and automotive industry bestpractices.

• Train students on safe work practices and the proper handlingof materials and equipment.

• Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and other required safetydocumentation.

• Monitor lab environments to ensure cleanliness, organization,and safe operations.

Administrative & Operational Support

• Coordinate with vendors to obtain quotes, process purchases,and support equipment acquisitions.

• Track purchase requests, maintenance schedules, and operationalrecords.

• Monitor designated budget expenditures and providerecommendations for resource allocation.

• Maintain technical records, reports, and inventory databasesusing various software systems.

• Participate in professional development opportunities to staycurrent with automotive technologies and industry trends.
