  • Follow dealership procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Report findings to Service Advisor and obtain necessary authorization for work.
  • Maintain clean, organized work area and properly use shop equipment.
  • Document services performed, parts used, and inspection results.

Automotive Apprentice Technician

Nielsen Nissan of Stanhope is seeking Automotive Apprentice Technicians to join our service team!

Location: Stanhope, New Jersey
Job Type: Full-Time
Work Location: On-site at Nielsen Nissan of Stanhope
Schedule: Scheduled across five days, Monday through Saturday, with Sundays and one designated weekday off
Pay Range: $16.00 – $18.00 per hour, paid weekly

Position Summary

The Automotive Apprentice Technician performs routine vehicle maintenance and entry-level service work in a safe, accurate, and timely manner. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in developing a career in automotive service. Previous automotive experience is helpful but not required for candidates who demonstrate mechanical aptitude, dependability, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. Express Technicians receive hands‑on guidance and opportunities to develop the skills needed to advance into more experienced automotive technician positions.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine vehicle-maintenance services, including oil and filter changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and other approved express services.
  • Complete multi-point vehicle inspections according to dealership and manufacturer procedures.
  • Inspect tires, brakes, batteries, filters, belts, hoses, wiper blades, lighting, and fluid levels.
  • Replace air filters, cabin filters, wiper blades, batteries, bulbs, and other approved maintenance items.
  • Perform basic tire services and repairs when properly trained and authorized.
  • Identify visible maintenance concerns and report findings accurately to the Service Advisor.
  • Perform only those services and repairs for which the employee has been properly trained and authorized.
  • Ask the Shop Foreman or supervising technician for assistance before performing unfamiliar work.
  • Follow repair orders, manufacturer procedures, dealership standards, and assigned service instructions.
  • Complete repair orders and inspection forms accurately and promptly.
  • Document all services performed, inspection findings, parts used, and additional maintenance recommendations.
  • Obtain required authorization before performing additional work.
  • Conduct quality-control checks to confirm that filters, drain plugs, fluid caps, wheels, and other serviced components are properly installed and secured.
  • Protect customer vehicles, interiors, keys, personal property, and confidential information.
  • Move customer and Company vehicles only when authorized, properly licensed, and eligible under Company insurance requirements.
  • Comply with Company distracted‑driving requirements whenever operating or moving a vehicle.
  • Properly use and maintain hand tools, shop equipment, vehicle lifts, tire equipment, and other assigned equipment.
  • Follow all dealership safety procedures and wear required protective footwear and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Properly handle and dispose of oil, filters, fluids, batteries, tires, and other automotive materials.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, vehicle damage, spills, accidents, and injuries.
  • Participate in Nissan, dealership, safety, and technical training as assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with Service Advisors, technicians, parts employees, and management.
  • Perform other related duties based on training level and business needs.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Previous automotive maintenance, express-service, lube‑technician, vocational‑school, or hands‑on mechanical experience is preferred but not required.
  • Interest in developing a career in automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to learn routine vehicle‑service procedures.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions carefully.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to performing services correctly.
  • Willingness to accept coaching, feedback, and additional training.
  • Ability to use automotive hand tools and shop equipment safely after receiving appropriate training.
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn electronic repair‑order and inspection systems.
  • Effective listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced service environment without sacrificing safety or quality.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work the assigned schedule, including Saturdays.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable under Company insurance requirements.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team‑oriented service department.

ASE certifications and completion of an automotive trade or technical‑school program are helpful but are not required for this entry-level position.

Physical & Safety Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 100 pounds.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
