Job summary

Johnson Matthey is seeking an Automation Technician in Smithfield, PA. You will support automation control systems, troubleshoot PLC/HMI/drive equipment, perform maintenance on automated electrical systems, and update documentation to improve performance.

Collaboration with production, maintenance and vendors is essential to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations. The role also includes training colleagues on troubleshooting techniques and safe maintenance practices, with a focus on

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, IT, CS or related field.
  • Experience with PLCs, HMIs/SCADA and industrial automation.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, drives and control panels.
  • Ability to analyze faults, determine root causes and implement solutions.
  • Familiarity with Allen‑Bradley systems is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Support operation of automation control systems to maintain safe, reliable production.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system and equipment issues with production/maintenance teams.
  • Maintain and adjust automated electrical equipment including PLCs, HMIs, drives and servo systems.
  • Update control systems documentation and support program modifications for performance.
  • Coordinate with external vendors to diagnose and resolve complex automation issues.
  • Train colleagues on troubleshooting techniques and safe maintenance practices.

The role
  • Supporting the operation of automation control systems to maintain safe, reliable and efficient production
  • Troubleshooting and resolving control system and equipment issues with production and maintenance teams
  • Performing maintenance and adjustments on automated electrical equipment including PLCs, HMIs, drives and servo systems
  • Updating control systems documentation and supporting program modifications to improve performance
  • Working with external vendors to diagnose and resolve complex automation issues
  • Training colleagues on troubleshooting techniques and safe maintenance practices

Key skills that will help you succeed in this role:

  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Experience with PLCs, HMI/SCADA systems and industrial automation in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, including drives, control panels and power distribution
  • Ability to analyse faults, identify root causes and implement effective solutions
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley systems (ControlLogix, RSLogix 5000) and industrial networks is advantageous
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
