Job summary

Tessy Plastics Corp. is seeking an Automation Technician to join our team in Auburn, NY.

This hands-on role focuses on keeping automation equipment running productively through preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and vision systems. You will work with our automation group and production teams to implement improvements, mentor junior technicians, and support installation and commissioning of new equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with at least 4 years manufacturing experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience with high speed precision manufacturing equipment and inspection systems, or a college degree in Automation related field.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering documents, blueprints, safety rules, SOPs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, changeovers, inspections, and routine troubleshooting to maximize uptime and production efficiency.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and automation issues, including replacement of sensors, switches, motors, and cylinders.
  • Set up, align, troubleshoot, and verify operation of EOAT systems, automation cells, and robotic equipment.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate lower‑level technicians while supporting their technical development.
  • Support installation, startup, qualification, and commissioning of new automation equipment.

Your Role at Tessy

The position of Automation Technician requires daily interaction with Tessy’s Automation group and other manufacturing groups. Responsibilities will include daily tasks and project work relating to Tessy’s automation equipment with emphasis on keeping the machines running productively and efficiently. It is a hands‑on position involving various levels of automation tasks, independent and team projects.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Perform preventive maintenance, changeovers, inspections, and routine troubleshooting to maximize equipment uptime and production efficiency.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and automation‑related issues, including replacement of components such as sensors, switches, motors, and cylinders.
  • Maintain and support automated equipment and systems by identifying worn or faulty components and coordinating corrective actions.
  • Conduct regular production floor inspections, assist operators with material handling, and provide technical support to manufacturing personnel.
  • Communicate equipment conditions, maintenance activities, and operational concerns with technicians, supervisors, engineers, and production teams.
  • Promote continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance equipment performance, reliability, safety, and process efficiency.
  • Maintain organized work areas, ensure proper tool control, and assist with spare parts inventory management, replenishment, and documentation.
  • Set up, align, troubleshoot, and verify operation of EOAT systems, automation cells, and robotic equipment using established procedures and training.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate lower‑level technicians while supporting their technical development and adherence to departmental standards.
  • Perform machining, fabrication, wiring, major repairs, equipment upgrades, and advanced troubleshooting of automation systems.
  • Support installation, startup, qualification, and commissioning of new automation equipment, ensuring systems are production ready.
  • Troubleshoot, program, modify, and optimize robotic systems, including top‑entry, side‑entry, SCARA, and 6‑axis robots.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and improve machine vision applications, including Cognex and Keyence systems, to increase functionality and efficiency.
  • Utilize PLC software to diagnose issues, modify existing programs, create basic control logic, and improve automation performance.
  • Assist with automation project planning, system design reviews, documentation updates, project coordination, preventive maintenance strategy development, and technology advancement initiatives.

What You’ll Bring

  • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 4 years’ manufacturing experience required.
  • 3-5 years of manufacturing technician experience relating to implementation and maintaining high speed precision manufacturing equipment and inspection systems highly desired or College Degree in Automation related field.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper use of basic hand tools and mathematical ability.
  • Possess attention for detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering documentation, blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and SOPs.
  • Experience with CAD or machine vision inspection systems preferred.
  • Experience with machining, fabrication, industrial equipment maintenance and repair, and industrial control and electrical systems desired.
  • Shift Hours: 6am to 6pm 12hr (days)

Compensation

Pay Range: $24 to $40 per hour

The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target base pay for new hire salaries of the position. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional job‑related factors, including knowledge, skills, experience, tenure and relevant education or training.
