Job summary

Amazon Web Services, Inc. in Chicago, IL, is seeking a System Development Engineer II to join our platform operations team.

You will build tools to automate fleet processes, respond to large-scale events, diagnose critical failures, and mentor engineers while providing daytime support for software development teams. You will collaborate with software teams to support infrastructure, perform SQL queries, and help design scalable automation solutions across Windows, Linux, and Unix environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in CS/Engineering/Math and one year of related experience, or three years of related experience.
• Experience supporting large-scale, multi‑tiered, distributed software applications and services.
• Designing and implementing provisioning platforms using shell scripting.
• Experience with SQL, PowerShell, Perl, Bash, Python, PHP, or Ruby.
• Experience maintaining databases such as MySQL, Oracle, or equivalent.
• Ability to troubleshoot issues in Windows, Linux, or Unix environments.

Responsibilities

• Build tools that automate and streamline fleet operations.
• Respond to large‑scale events involving fleets.
• Diagnose and fix critical software and system failures.
• Mentor engineers and assist in training new engineers.
• Provide first‑line daytime support for operational tickets across software‑development teams.
• Propose and implement automation to improve efficiency and scalability.
• Partner with software teams to support infrastructure and perform SQL queries across Windows, Linux, or Unix systems.
