Job summary

L.L.Bean is seeking an Automation Mechanical Technician to join the Facilities team in Freeport, Maine. The technician will focus on installing, maintaining, and supporting complex automation systems, including robotics and industrial equipment. Qualifications

We are seeking a highly skilled Automation Mechanical Technician to join our Facilities team on the 2nd shift at the company’s Freeport, Maine location.

Responsibilities
  • Apply advanced knowledge of decision‑making processes, precautionary techniques, job planning, personal protective equipment, and test equipment to recognize and avoid hazards.
  • Provide second‑level support for complex mechanical automated issues to all departments.
  • Install, maintain, and support complex Kuka robot systems as well as other automated, pneumatic, cutting, packaging, sorting, high‑speed sewing, injection‑molding, and carton transport equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on a variety of complex industrial equipment as scheduled.
  • Follow procedures and properly handle Universal Waste in accordance with state guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all new and existing installations.
  • Act as an internal resource, providing support and expertise for projects and maintenance; may also act as a project lead.
  • Oversee the work of automated equipment contractors and vendors.
  • Apply computer skills to troubleshoot and repair automated industrial equipment, adjusting parameter settings on HMI, VFD, and IO‑controlled devices.
  • Collaborate with internal clients to support new and existing technology requirements.
  • Mentor and support technicians of all levels.
  • Identify hazardous conditions or actions that may cause injury or property damage and ensure action to abate them.
  • Ensure appropriate communication of issues to coworkers and leadership.
  • Share expertise to build technical and diagnostic strength within the team.
  • Provide coverage at designated times to meet business demands and off‑shift shutdowns.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • This is a safety‑sensitive position. Employees must agree not to come to work while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Health and Safety Requirement

Garage Support Duties
  • Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines, trailers, and all types of outdoor equipment.
  • Perform tune‑ups, oil changes, brake work, tire mounting, and other routine maintenance tasks.
  • Use hydraulic jacks and pneumatic lifts for vehicle repairs.
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems such as faulty starters or alternators.
  • Repair and maintain light‑to‑heavy equipment including lawnmowers, chainsaws, generators, and snowmobiles.
  • Plan and prioritize major repairs, including outsourcing when necessary.
  • Train crews to perform field repairs when required.
  • Use and maintain computer systems including Microsoft O365, CMMS, and GPS vehicle monitoring.
  • Obtain a valid driver’s license; pass a driver’s background check; and adhere to the Driver’s Policy 3.13.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational or technical degree preferred but not required.
  • 2-5 years of experience in industrial equipment maintenance.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Advanced analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Knowledge and experience with NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace).
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex controls, including adjusting and programming parameter settings with HMI, IO, and VFD devices.
  • Experience reading hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.
  • Ability to collaborate at many internal and external levels.
  • Self‑motivated and able to work independently while providing guidance to junior technicians.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft O365, CMMS, and GPS vehicle monitoring systems.
  • Inability to provide background check for driving company vehicles is incompatible with the role.
