Job summary

MAPEI Inc. is seeking an Automation Engineering Intern for Summer 2027 at our West Chicago, IL facility. You will work with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to support automation projects and gain hands-on experience with PLC, HMI, sensors, and control systems.

The internship runs May–August 2027 (12 weeks) with a 40-hour work week, housing stipends considered in select cases, and potential full-time opportunities after graduation.

Qualifications

• Actively pursuing a bachelor’s/graduate degree in Automation, Electrical, Controls Engineering, or related field.
• Strong motivation to learn and succeed in a hands-on manufacturing setting.
• Willingness to travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Support automation and controls projects for manufacturing equipment and processes.
• Assist with PLC, HMI, sensor, instrumentation, and control-system activities.
• Help troubleshoot equipment and identify opportunities to improve reliability.
• Collect and analyze equipment, process, and automation-performance data.
• Support system testing, validation, documentation, and implementation.
• Assist with technical drawings, reports, procedures, and project deliverables.

Job Description

The Opportunity
As an Automation Engineering Intern, you will work alongside our engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to support automation and controls projects at MAPEI’s West Chicago manufacturing facility. You will gain hands-on experience with industrial equipment, control systems, troubleshooting, and continuous-improvement initiatives in a live manufacturing environment. This experience may lead to future opportunities in automation, controls, or manufacturing engineering.

• Support automation and controls projects for manufacturing equipment and processes.
• Assist with PLC, HMI, sensor, instrumentation, and control-system activities.
• Help troubleshoot equipment and identify opportunities to improve reliability.

The Program Details

• Full-time schedule (40 hours per week)
