Title: Lab Automation Engineer (Contract)
Location: San Francisco, CA (Locals only)
Duration: 12 Months, possibility of extension/conversion
The Opportunity
The Lab Automation Engineer (Contract) is a hands-on role within the Automation Science & Technology group, supporting development, integration, testing, and commissioning of automated scientific workflows for the Roche/Genentech R&D Autonomous Lab Accelerator. You will translate scientific protocols into reliable automated methods and integrated workcell execution, working closely with scientific SMEs, automation specialists, informatics and software engineers, system integrators, and instrument vendors.
This role suits someone who is curious, resourceful, self-motivated, and comfortable taking ownership of technical problems from definition through resolution in a fast-moving, highly collaborative environment focused on building increasingly autonomous laboratories.
In this role, you will
- Translate scientific protocols into executable automated methods and validate their performance on integrated laboratory workcells.
- Program, configure, test, and troubleshoot laboratory automation systems and scientific instruments.
- Support multi-instrument workflow integration, scheduling, commissioning, FAT/SAT, and verification activities.
- Work closely with system integrators and instrument vendors to resolve hardware, software, communication, and device-integration issues.
- Partner with informatics colleagues to connect instruments and automated workcells with schedulers, APIs, databases, LIMS/ELN systems, and other digital services.
- Help develop and validate interfaces that enable reliable programmatic and agent-driven execution of instruments and workcells.
- Document automation methods, configurations, test results, troubleshooting procedures, and technical learnings.
- Take ownership of assigned automation challenges and drive them to practical resolution, escalating when additional expertise is required.
Who you are
- Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, life sciences, automation, or a related discipline, with approximately 2-5 years of relevant hands-on experience in laboratory automation, instrument programming, or integrated scientific workflows.
- Hands-on experience programming or developing methods using one or more laboratory automation control environments such as Hamilton VENUS, Dynamic Devices Method Manager, Tecan FluentControl, Agilent VWorks, or comparable platforms.
- Working knowledge of laboratory scheduling platforms such as HighRes Cellario, UK Robotics Revolution, BioSero Green Button Go, or similar systems.
- Experience translating scientific protocols into automated workflows and validating their performance on laboratory automation platforms.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across instruments, automation hardware, software, and workflow integration.
- Self-motivated, resourceful, and results-oriented, with strong ownership and follow-through.
- Able to learn quickly and work effectively with scientists, informatics colleagues, engineers, vendors, and system integrators.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to reproducible, well-documented engineering practices.
Additional Qualifications
- Hands-on integration of multiple instruments into an automated workcell or end-to-end laboratory workflow.
- Exposure to robotics, robotic arms, mobile robots, machine vision, or other physical AI applications.
- Familiarity with Python or another scripting language, APIs, databases, messaging systems, or instrument communication protocols.
- Background supporting programmatic or agent-based control of instruments and automated laboratory systems.
- Work in autonomous, high-throughput, or closed-loop experimentation environments.
