Job summary

Goshen Engineering in North Carolina seeks Automation Engineers to design, develop, build, integrate, test, commission, and support automation and control solutions across electrical and mechanical disciplines.

The role covers PLC/HMI/SCADA/servo/VFD programming, safety systems, technical documentation, customer support, and project execution, with progression from hands-on work to project leadership as you gain experience.

About the Role

Goshen Engineering is seeking Automation Engineers to design, develop, build, integrate, test, commission, and support automation and control solutions. The role works across electrical and mechanical controls, PLC/HMI/SCADA/servo/VFD/robot programming, safety systems, technical documentation, customer support, and project execution. The position may be filled at Level I, II, or III based on demonstrated technical proficiency and experience, with responsibility increasing from assigned technical work to independent project leadership, advanced system integration, and development of less-experienced engineers and technicians.

What You'll Do
  • Develop electrical and mechanical controls-system design solutions based on engineering principles, applicable codes, and customer requirements.
  • Work with the engineering and automation team to design, build, test, document, and implement automation solutions from concept through customer-site implementation.
  • Develop and modify electrical schematics and review bills of material for automation projects and related equipment.
  • Program and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFD, servo, and robot control systems, including Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and a variety of other brand platforms as applicable to assigned projects.
  • Design and implement safety control circuits and safety-system solutions consistent with applicable standards and project requirements.
  • Perform system testing, troubleshooting, startup, commissioning, and technical support at Goshen and customer locations as assigned.
  • Interpret customer requirements, identify design parameters and engineering challenges, and develop practical technical solutions based on customer communications and observation of processes.
  • Provide technical controls support to customers, including PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFD, servo, robotics, and general control-system troubleshooting.
  • Act as project leader on assigned automation projects as appropriate to level, coordinating technical work and maintaining accurate project records, documentation, and customer correspondence.
  • Balance multiple projects and responsibilities while supporting project schedules, deliverables, testing, commissioning, and handover activities.
  • Manage or support vendor and bill-of-material activities, including product cross-reference, component alternatives, and vendor communication as required by the assignment.
  • Collaborate across electrical, mechanical, process, production, quality, sales, and other functions to resolve technical and project issues.
  • Develop and maintain customer relationships and communicate technical information and solutions to customers and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in training and developing junior engineers and other team members as appropriate to level; maintain accurate project, revision-control, and technical documentation.
What You'll Bring

Required

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a similar related engineering field; experience may be substituted for education.
  • Related automation, controls, electrical, or engineering experience appropriate to the assigned level.
  • Ability to create electrical schematics and work with PLC, HMI, VFD, servo, and robot control systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, controls, and electromechanical problems and determine an appropriate course of action.
  • Critical thinking with exceptional problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and in team environments.
  • Proactive, resourceful, highly motivated approach with strong communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to learn new software and technical topics quickly, balance multiple projects and responsibilities, and work with increasing independence based on level.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites as required for project support and commissioning; additional hours, weekends, or travel may be required based on project and customer needs.
  • Knowledge of electrical panel design, control circuits, power distribution, component specification, SCCR, circuit protection, applicable NEC/NFPA and IEC requirements, PLC architecture, industrial networking, machine safety, and related automation technologies as applicable to assigned work.
  • Regular on-site physical presence is required; ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds, and safely use computers, standard office equipment, tools, machinery, testing equipment, and measuring devices required for assigned duties.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a similar related engineering field.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley software family; Siemens TIA Portal experience is a plus.
  • Experience programming HMIs and SCADA systems
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or similar electrical schematic software.
  • Experience modifying or programming industrial robotic systems; Fanuc, ABB, or Kuka experience is particularly relevant.
