AUTOMATION ENGINEER I
At Gables Engineering, (a HEICO Company), we've been engineering the avionics systems pilots trust since 1946. We are looking for an Automation Engineer I to design, build, and program the test fixtures that verify our electronic and avionics assemblies on the production floor.
About Gables Engineering:
Founded in 1946, Gables Engineering is a leader in avionics controls and advanced cockpit solutions. Based in Coral Gables, FL, and a proud HEICO Company, we partner with airlines and OEMs worldwide to deliver tailored, next-generation avionics technology.
What You'll Do:
This is an entry-level, hands‑on role. Reporting to the Director of Automation Engineering and guided by senior engineers, you'll own fixture projects from concept through deployment: designing them, building and wiring them yourself, writing the software that runs them, and training the technicians who use them. It's a great way to grow into broader automation and control system work.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and build electrical/mechanical test fixtures for functional, in‑circuit, and burn‑in testing, based on product schematics and engineering specifications
- Select and wire interface hardware, including connectors, relays, switches, pneumatics, and sensors
- Write and debug test scripts and control software (primarily LabVIEW) to run fixtures and record pass/fail results
- Prototype each fixture and test it against known‑good and known‑bad units until results are repeatable
- Work with the machine shop or outside vendors on machined or fabricated parts
- Prepare fixture documentation, including bills of materials, wiring diagrams, and operating instructions
- Train test technicians and production operators to set up, run, and troubleshoot new fixtures
- Respond to fixture issues on the production floor and get fixtures back in service quickly
- Maintain calibration, preventive maintenance, and spare parts for assigned fixtures
- Find manual test or inspection steps that could be automated, and propose projects to reduce cycle time and errors
- Review new product designs with Engineering to flag features that would be hard or costly to test
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Exposure to LabVIEW, PLCs, or relay logic through coursework, projects, or work
- Experience in electronics manufacturing or assembly environments
- Aerospace or avionics exposure
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Automation/Manufacturing Engineering
- 0-3 years of relevant experience; internships or co‑ops in test fixture, automation, or electromechanical projects are welcome
- Basic soldering and hand‑tool skills, and comfort building and wiring fixtures yourself
- Working knowledge of electrical schematics and the ability to turn one into a working test setup
- Familiarity with data acquisition hardware and basic instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies)
- Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD
- Strong written documentation habits
- Willingness to spend time on the production floor regularly, not just at a desk
